dd seems to be very gassy and uncomfy a lot of the time. she is 3 weeks old. she grunts and strains like she's trying to poop, and was up doing this a lot last night. i eat a lot of dairy- could this be why? should i try cutting some out? anything else that could be causing this, or is it just a newborn thing? dd1 was formula fed, and i dont remember her doing this (although she spat up like a maniac). any thoughts? thanks

Both of mine have been this way, though I do not know what the norm is. DS1 was later found to be gluten and dairy sensitive. DS2 is only 1.5 weeks old and has gotten increasingly fussy and gassy since birth. I'm starting a strict elimination diet on Tuesday after the ILs go home.

Interested to see what others will say, too!

Before you start an elimination diet, Leah, you should look at kellymom.com for recommendations and links on how to do it properly. I think babies should not be fussy for TOO long, but on the other hand, some fussiness can be normal.

So, was she pooping? Did you try burping her? In different positions? Letting her suck a finger to burp it out? Some people are just gassy at times.

I lost a lot of weight on elimination diets (that I could not afford to lose) due to oversupply so while I believe they can work I also think you should look into some easier solutions first, especially as calcium and vitamin D are crucial to your health and your supply.

My 9 wk old has this problem with dairy, tomato, citrus fruit, onions, bananas? and if I eat chocolate when she is having issues then it makes her feel worse. If I eat chocolate when she is okay, then no problems!

at 3 weeks, my baby started doing all the things you described. now he's 12 weeks and seems to have grown out of it. i eat a good bit of dairy, too, and for a while i tried eating less, but it didn't seem to make a difference. i guess for my little guy, it was just about his belly and intestines being so immature still, and now he's grown out of it. that's what i figure, anyway.

thanks for the replies ladies! yes she poops plenty. i do burp her, and she does burp but it takes quite a while to get one out. i havent tried letting her suck my finger to get a burp out, ill try that. id rather not start off with eliminating anything from my diet, i just dont really know what's the norm and the fact that i eat a lot of dairy was the first thing that popped into mind. its possible dd1 was like this too and i just forgot. i think ill call the lc tomorrow and ask her opinion. ill check out kellymom too.

this was also the case for me and my dd. at her one month pediatrician appt. the doc told me that gassiness and fussiness and spitting up were her number one complaints at four weeks (with number two being that baby doesn't poo as much as before), and that these were symptoms of baby's digestive system growing and learning how to work. she said the problems would almost certainly clear up on their own, and sure enough, they did.

Yeah, my dd did that too. She was and is a super easygoing baby, but from about 3-4 weeks she always had an hour or so at night where she seemed very gassy/crampy and would be almost unconsoleable.

She'd root and nurse frantically, pull off, cry, squirm, fart, ... clearly uncomfortable.

I also eat quite a lot of dairy (well, a normal amount I think
), and thought about cutting it out, but my dd just grew out of it after a few weeks/months.
