This is #4 for me but #1 to actually BF exclusively so I am kinda in new territory. DD is almost 3 weeks old and nurses really good during the day. At night though she seems to enjoy her sleep and will sleep all night without waking to nurse even once. We are talking sleep from around 11pm until 7am or later. She has done this since birth. I generally wake her up at night to eat but have slept through myself a couple times (how I know she will sleep all night without waking)

I am also concerned about her pooping. Until a few days ago she pooped about 6-8 times a day and suddenly she hasn't pooped at all in 3 days. She isn't distressed and hasn't stopped eating and isn't spitting up more than a few drops when she doesn't burp good.

TIA

It sounds pretty normal to me.

As long as you don't feel like you are getting overly engorged or your supply is suffering, I'd let her sleep and enjoy the rest myself! Her sleep patterns will probably change in a few weeks and you'll likely have more nighttime feedings, but you might get lucky, who knows.

Since she's eating okay, as long as she's wetting diapers frequently I wouldn't be concerned about the poop at ALL! My pediatrician's daughter went FOURTEEN DAYS without pooping once, and he didn't freak out a bit -- he said he knows that BF is such a perfect food that some babies really digest every bit of it and there's very little to poop out.

And the spitting up thing is okay too, lots of BFed babies don't spit up at all -- my first one never did.

Enjoy your new baby!

I think the she should be eating more at night. 3 weeks is really early to be sleeping that long. It also seems really early for her to go that long between poops. As babies get older, they will do this occasionally, but at three weeks that seems very early for that. How is her weight gain?

Also, how are her pees? Is she having more than 6 heavy wet diapers a day. See kellymom: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/enough-milk.html for diaper and weight information.

8 hours or more does seem like an awful long stretch for a 3 week old to be sleeping - and a long time for your breasts to go too! This is the time your supply is 'setting itself', so a feed between midnight and 5 am is important.

Can you see an LC or another health care professional to get an accurate weight?

The combination of the long sleep and the stopping pooing makes me a little bit nervous.

BF babies CAN go for a long time between poos, but they say it starts after six weeks.

How many times a day does she nurse, and how is her weight gain?

My oldest also slept through the night early on, and I know I read this wasn't good but it didn't last very long. I think she slept 12am-6am or so within the first 2 weeks, but then that started to vary. She was the earliest of my 3 to sleep through the night eventually, when she got to doing it consistently. She also was the NEATEST of the 3. She would go long times between poops and rarely poop outside her diaper. My 2nd daughter would also go long times between poops but they were messy disasters, and my son started this earlier than they say in the baby books as well. I always figured he was just earlier on the curve of average of when this would start. My kids usually reach their milestones earlier than usual, which I didn't know at the time, but that has been their general pattern.

FYI, my 7 month old NEVER pooped that much in 1 day, but he peed a ton. He would go every day or so. Now he goes every few days, but I definitely remember my second child not going to over 10 days.

Maybe you are just making enough milk that she gets what she needs for now during the day. As long as her cry is strong, and she isn't falling asleep right away when she eats during the daytime, and her weight is fine I wouldn't worry.

As long as she has enough wet dipes, and seems ;normal; then all is well.

My oldest was sleepign thru the night form DAY 1 - no kiddoing. 5.5hrs stright thru. by a week old it was 7.
Oh.. if only I knew how lucky I was!

My second nursed practically all night long - but was a rare pooper. She pooped about 1x a week on average, a few times she went 12 or 14 days without pooping.

And I;ve alwasy lived by the old adage "Never wake a sleeping baby"

During the day she nurses about every 2 hours...sometimes she will go 3 hours. Her pee is what I would call abundant.....7-10 dipes full a day (Kissaluvs 0's soaked completely). She was born weighing 8lbs 10oz, lost to 8lbs 4oz and is back up now to 9lbs 6oz.

I haven't been getting overly engorged when she sleeps a little longer but most nights I do wake her up to nurse at least once so she isn't technically going all night without eating. I just know that she will because I have slept over all night a couple times without so much as a peep out of her. I had the flu for the first week and a half after she was born and was very sick and running an incredibly high fever (105-107) and accidentially slept in once then and then slept in one other time a few days ago. Also eventhough I was sick and so was the rest of my family the baby hasn't has even so much as a sniffle during all of this so I have no worry that she has the flu or a cold or anything like that.

7-10 soaking pees a day is great! You didn't say when her lowest weight was, but if she is gaining 1 oz a day then you guys are doing fine. For now, waking her to feed her once at night sounds like a great idea - it will keep your supply up and keep your baby full of yummy mama's milk too.

Congratulations and enjoy!
