Hi there, I am a High Risk Patient, mostly because I am Diabetic, and my OB is sending me for a full anatomy scan ultrasound and fetal echo that can only be done after 20 weeks... is this normal? why are they doing this? does anybody know a reason why they would do this or just to be on the safe side?

any thoughts?

Dropping in from December thread...

Lots of things can put you in the "high risk" category; for me, it's because I am over age 35. Once you're in the category, the 20-week level II u/s is standard. I worried about it unnecessarily also but am very glad I did it.

Standard procedure here, too. My doctor's practice recommends it for all pregnant women, irrespective of any risk factors. Last time around, I was a low-risk patient, being 34 at the time -- now I'm 36, so all of a sudden I'm a higher risk patient. Go figure.

They suggest it be done between 18 and 22 weeks.

Here is the reason my peri gave me:
In most states you can terminate the pregnancy before 24 weeks, thus sometime they want to do level 2 at 18 weeks, so they have time to do an amnio (if scan shows something wrong), then you have to wait 2-4 weeks for the amnio results and you still will have time to terminate legally if you chose to. If under any circumstances you will not consider termination, you can do level 2 at 20-22 weeks.

I am high risk too, but no one mentioned fetal eco to me. I know sometimes they do it if they do not like the level 2 scan. I just think that want to schedule you just in case for the fetal eco, to garantee a time slot. I whould not worry about it.
