I'm with DS 24/7 and so I would probably notice this, maybe not immediately, but fairly soon. This morning after waking up and changing DS, I saw underneath the very surface layer of the skin of his heel what appears to be a strand of about a 1 inch hair. It is completely under his skin and is slightly red along where the hair strand is. Now how in the world could it get in there and then completely close up so that I can't get a grip on it to pull it out with a tweezer?!! Should I *make* a cut/slit myself or is this something to go to the doctor and have them deal with it?

Even in babies, the heel has a lot of skin. If you can see the hair it's close enough to the surface that you won't have to cut down to blood to get it out.

Just do a hot compress on the reddish part afterwards to take care of the swelling.

For some reason, in my apartment, I get cat hairs as splinters fairly regularly. Never had that happen when we had carpet, but on these floors I'll walk along and then there's a hair in my foot. Feels like broken glass. Glad it wasn't as painful for your ds. Must be because it didn't go down to the nerve, which is yet another sign that it is close enough to the surface to deal with at home.

It may be a very thin sliver as well. If it's been there even a short time it would be possible for the entry to seal over.

When I had wood floors and two big Labs I got hair splinters in my heels all the times. First time it happened I thought it was a wood splinter until I pulled it out and it was dog hair, it was soo weird.

I agree with Sapphire warm compresses help with swelling and after a hot bath I'd try to pinch the skin where the end of the hair was to see if I could push it out enough to grab with tweezers.
