I received a phone call around 6:00, he said this is Animal Control, do you have a dog? I said no we don't, he asked again you don't have a dog? I said no we don't, he than asked what address i am at (typing this out makes me sort of sick to my stomach) i told him, i than said we did have two dogs, he asked what kind and i told him. (but we haven't had them close to 4-5 years ago)
He than said ok goodbye. At the time i was trying to get dinner prepared and dealing with kids.
But once i told my dh, i sort of realized i shouldn't have given out my address, i am home alone with the kids a lot. Of course dh is getting me worried saying that someone could be casing the place to see if we have a dog. so they can rob us?

My dh did call animal control to see if someone called but it was closed and they had someone answering there phones for them (for some reason i can't think of what that person is called: )

so yes should i worry or nay?

It does sound odd to me. Did he give any reason for asking? I think I would definitely follow up with animal control. If they didn't call you, I would call the police. If nothing else, maybe they can send an extra patrol by your house a few times a night for the next few.

Yes, you should worry.

That was likely not animal control; probably someone scoping out your house for a robbery. I would call the police asap.

Yeah, that. ^ I don't think animal control calls people and asks them if they have dogs. I would be pretty freaked out.

Perhaps you SHOULD get a dog ASAP!!!!!!

Yeah, that wasn't animal control. They'd already know if you had a dog or not.

Maybe you can get one of those signs that says "Intruders will be shot on sight" or something, just in case they come by. Stay safe, okay?

I don't think it's time to get all worked up quite yet. There are billion and one reasons they could've called you. Ever looked at a not-brand-new dog tag? They're hard to read, it's very easy to guess the wrong number. Do you have neighbors with a loud dog? Maybe someone thought it was in your back yard and they called to complain. Did you give those dogs to someone else? Are they still registered to you? Did the homeowner before you have a dog chipped with that address?

Call in the morning and see what it was about, but don't keep yourself up worrying about it. I think the idea that someone is about to rob you is pretty far-fetched.

No, it isn't. That's actually something I remember in a presentation by a reformed criminal. He went around and told people how he scammed them. That was one of the things he used, and variations of it.

Yeah, it sounds to me like someone is casing the joint. Do you have friends/relatives who have a dog you can borrow for a few days?

Yeah, it could be a blurry tag OR it could be a nuisance dog that someone reported and they weren't sure of the dog's address; ie. maybe you have the biter/barker and are LYING to protect it.

Or,
yeah, call the police.

sorry gotta go

I disagree. If someone had reported you the animal control ppl would have told you so and what the complaint was (we had this happen when our dog was barking a lot one night - the person who called said they were just letting us know it had been reported). Also, they would not have asked your address. I would be worried.

Also, I agree with a pp, on that show "It takes a thief" or something like that, this was one tactic this guy used many, many times to scope out houses.

I would contact the police and report it in case they have had other citizens reporting similar, and of course, call Animal Control tomorrow first thing to see if they have someone making calls.

I'm kind of ummm...devil may care.... I think is the phrase (no one can get me kind of thing), but that would freak me out...definitely call the police and ask for a few drive-bys.

That sounds creepy to me. I agree with the PPs who said to call the police, then check with Animal Control in the morning.

I don't know what size town you live in but both small towns I lived in had the city office reseptionist handle calls for the animal control...the actual dog catcher never talks to anyone. And most city employees I've heard on the phone (used to work in a city office building) always introduced themselves as such...."I'm *insert name here* with the city of *?* and I need to know...."

Sounds like a strange call...I'd definately follow up with the animal control dept and find out if they know who may have called...if it was an employee they need to know how unprofessional he was...if they didn't call...report it to the police...I know for a fact they have the ability to trace phone calls to any number...we had 3 diff bomb threats and I saw the phone logs from the phone company myself. But I don't know if they will trace calls for something like this or not.

Any caller ID??

Someone who has your phone number can also get your address quite easily. Don't be upset with yourself for giving it to whoever called. Sure, whoever it is knows you don't have a dog, but dogs aren't the only things that can stop someone from breaking into your home.

I agree with the pp that you should contact animal control to find out if the call was legit, then contact the police if it was not. and good vibes to you, mama.

if they have a reason, animal control SHOWS UP.
believe me, i know, someone called cause we had a pit (they were "mauled "m by our pit, who was in our fenced in yard, and noone gave a crap for more than a week later. uhh..yeah. right. someone was just pissed off at us again :sigh: )
but anyway, if they needed to know something like that, theyd be more professional and if not, come out to see, depending on the reason, and if theyre that persistant and want to know your addy and all , then somethings up. if theyre calling someone, they have your addy already anyway, and it wouldnt just be a demand for it, theyd ask to confirm or something. somethings up, and definitely call the police, but yeah with the phone number, you can easily get the address anyway, but thats just freaky! s:
