Is this true about iron/vit.c?

I need to boost my iron. GP prescribed conventional iron tablets. I told him that I prefer to take the supplement I get from the hfs (Floradix) because it's a form that's better absorbed and tolerated. I know that vit. c increases iron absorption, but doc claimed that it also counteracts the digestive upsets that often occur w/ the prescribed stuff. Has anyone ever heard that? Floradix has worked very well for me in the past, but just thinking about the taste makes me shudder and I can get the prescribed tablets for free. Unless I can find info. supporting doc's idea, I'll continue to choke down the Floradix.

I've never heard that. I'd go with the floradix.

I just read the ingredient list in the prescription -- gelatin, modified starch, shellac and lots of other nasties. Floradix it is. Still, I'm curious about his comment re the vitamin c.
I don't even understand what his comment is....

He said that if you take vit. c with the supplements, you won't get the constipation/stomach complaints often associated w/ iron tablets. He said that the reason people have problems w/ them is because the iron isn't absorbed properly and sits in the gut. Since the vit. c helps absorption, it alleviates the digestive problems. It kind of makes sense, but I read a lot about health/nutrition and had never heard that. I thought the problem was the *type* of iron used in conventional supplements.
Well, I would take the Vit C with the Floradix.

But how do you know it's working? The Floradix - I mean.
The iron tablets he's prescribing are synthetic and will not be very usable to your body and will be somewhat toxic. The reason most people get constipated is because it's not well absorbed-and a good thing too. It's your body's natural defense mechanism and I would not recommend overriding it with come vitamin C. You would never NEVER experience constipation with wheat grass or barley green-both very high in USABLE iron.

Floradix is a great supplement, but you would need to take it in therapeutic doses to see a quick result. If you are low in iron (how do you know?) I would say floradix is safe as it is plant derived, but you could also be taking chlorophyll, chlorella, spirulina-any of the "super greens." Alfalfa (tea or capsules is another option. Liver is also high in iron, if you're into that. Designs for Health has a great iron supplement that is liver-derived. If you were in real trouble and were okay with animal products I would recommend that over a prescription any day.

Gitti-Floradix has vitamin C in it.

I'm vegetarian, but thanks for all the other info. which was very helpful. I know the Floradix works because last year it helped boost my iron from 9.6 to 10.9 in a month, and then to 11.5 after another month. Of course, I was concentrating on iron-rich foods as well, but I don't think the food alone could have improved things so quickly.

I got tested last week because I've been feeling unwell. My blood iron was 10.5, stored iron (ferritin) was 4.something (very low) and b12 also was low
(172). I don't know if the b12 issue is causing the low iron (not quite sure how it all works), or if they are 2 seperate problems.

I'm scheduled for a b12 injection on Monday, but am trying to gather info. on whether or not it's a good idea to try supplements first. I trust Floradix, so I'll start on that, and go stock up on greens and other good stuff.
B-12 absolutely contributes to low iron levels-it's all a balance. If you are getting injections-great. But you should follow up with a sublingual. Floradix has iron, and I love it, but I'm not convinced it's usable. IT's all plant derived and B-12 sourced from plants is generally not considered usable by humans. (We were vegan and dd had iron def. anemia as well as a significant B-12 def.) We did correct it, and she did thke Floradix, but I did not rely on it for B-12.

I think the last part of my post was confusing. I meant that I will use the Floradix for the iron it contains, not as a b12 supplement. I was wondering if a b12 supplement in tablet form would correct a deficiency, or would I be risking serious problems if I don't get the shot right away? The doc I saw last week was not my preferred GP, so I'll make an appt. with the one I like to ask all my questions before I go for the injection.
No, you weren't confusing at all! I was just clarifying becasue we've had experience here. I also don't want anyone else to look at the bottle and think they are getting what they need. We didn't use the injections-but that doesn't mean you don't need to. It depends on how low your levels acutally are. Good Luck!
Firefaery, would you mind sharing what your dd's b12 level was and what you did to boost it?
I will go dig up my records for you to give you her exact readings. I just gave her animal protein (grass fed and organic-she didn't eat much!) and did sublinguals. We were vegan, but I allowed the animal protein because I couldn't find anything that said veganism is safe when you are dealing with significant gut damage. I was reading that with god sources of B-12 from animals it was possiblr to bring up levels quickly. It came up on it's own, although they were talking about injections. I was never pushed on that point though.
We did lots of preventative stuff (spirulina and chlorella, red star nutritional yeast and sea veggies. It just didn't work in our case.)
