Sorry ladies, I have been away for a while... Things have been hectic around here

As you can see my little guy came - last Friday (May 7). I started to go into and out of labour on Tuesday night. The labour pains were pretty regular and intense for a couple of hours such that I only slept 2 hours that night. They petered out though, much to my chagrin. I thought I would still have time.. so I did some running around Wednesday (I should have slept!!). Later that night the contractions started up again and kept me awake all night. They petered out somewhat during the day on Thursday such that I only had sporadic ones and could sleep a little (about 3 hours on the couch). In the evening however, things returned full force and we finally made our way to the birthing centre at midnight Friday morning. I was only 2 cm dilated by this point and was very disappointed. They still admitted me though and I rested between contractions.

By 7am I was only 3 cm - so frustrating. The labour had gone into my back and I was getting extreme pressure in my rectum so I got into the shower with DH and he applied counter pressure. This went on for HOURS (6 hours). I was getting exhausted by this point because I had to stand - sitting was too uncomfy.

At 2pm on Friday the MW ruptured my membranes and thought things would progress quickly - well they didn't because the little bub was posterior. The pressure in my rectum and back labour was becoming unbearable by this point so the MW suggested an epidural if I could dilate to 5cm. I don't know how I did it but 3 hours later I got to 5cm and got the walking epidural (I was so disappointed as I really wanted a natural water birth). I just couldn't go on with only having had about 4-6 hours of sleep in 4 days, plus my body wasn't working well anymore so they put me on an oxytocin drip. The MW had also been talking to DH about transferring me to a hospital because she was concerned about my ability to push when the time came - just because I was so exhausted. She was also getting worried about the baby...

After the epidural and drip was started, the MW had me lay on each side for an hour to try and flip the baby. She also gave me tinctures that are supposed to help turn a posterior baby. Eventuall, for some reason I just felt that I had to go on my hands and knees - and that seemed to work - the baby flipped!!!! It was just in time because he was ready to come. after only a few pushes, our little guy was born.

Although I didn't get my water birth, and I had to have an epidural, I don't feel at all remorseful about not being able to do it completely naturally. After talking to the MW, she said she was worried that I wasn't going to accept the epidural and oxytocin, which could have jeopardized a vaginal birth (because my body was so exhausted). I am happy with the decision I made and hope that next time I get my water birth!

Birth does not always go as we hope/dream/plan for it to. You worked with what you were given and have a wonderful new son. You should be very proud of yourself for all your effort especially with so little sleep! Hope you and the new LO are catching up on some much needed rest! Happy Babymoon Mama!

Aw! Sounds like you were very brave and persistent. Love that part where instinct to get on hands and knees was the just the thing to turn the baby! Brilliant. Many congratulations and all the warmest wishes for a sweet babymoon!
