I'm pretty embarassed about this problem I'm having, but am incredibly uncomfortable and hoping that someone might have some advice!

For almost two weeks now, I've had horrible itching in my rectal area. I'm almost 24 weeks pregnant now, and thought that it might be a sign of the dreaded hemorrhoids, but everything I read online says that they should hurt, and I only find it dreadfully itchy. I've been wiping the area with witch hazel, which brings some temporary relief, but I'm not sure what else to do. Does anyone have any experience with this or ideas? My next midwives' appointment is on Monday, so I'll ask them too, but I feel like I'm going to crawl out of my skin.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I can help, but I definetly can relate! It comes and goes for me, lately it hasn't been an issue. I had it pre-preg too.

I get this too; it's so weird! Witch hazel definitely helps - use it after every BM, at least. I also find that Vaseline helps. I'm not sure why, but maybe it just protects the area from rubbing against my clothing - whatever, give it a try. Witch hazel and Vaseline - my remedy of choice.

Hugs to you. People have no idea how the itching can drive one insane. I had this once as a kid (due to a tiny tear) and it was horrible. I hope your midwife has some good suggestions and this let's up soon.

Ugh! I get this too. I wipe the area every time I GO to the bathroom, not just when I poop, and every day or so I use the showerhead snake to give the area a good cleaning. I haven't tried witch hazel, I'll have to give that a go.

Also, I use a blowdryer on low to dry the area completely, and I use an anti-fungal powder in my panties every day (I'm VERY prone to yeast infections down there and those itch like CRAZY). And when I do move my bowels, I use those flushable wipes they make these days. So far, it's not fool proof, but it helps.

I had rectal surgery last year. It was awful.

Anyway, the doctor recommended an ointment called Calmoseptine. You can get it without a prescription, but when I went to the pharmacy I had to ask the pharmacist for it, as they kept it behind the counter.

The active ingredients are menthol and zinc oxide. It also contains calamine, clorothymol, glycerin, lanolin, phenol, sodium bicarbonate, and thymol. It provides a moisture barrier and also a nice, cool, "minty fresh" feeling. Kind of like Vicks Vaporub for your bum....although not as intense or greasy.

You could also try a diaper ointment after the witch hazel-- might keep the area protected for longer and give some relief.

I can so completely relate to this, ugh. I have this from time to time and it comes from a small tear in the rectum/anus. I can clearly recall a few nights of sitz baths at 2am, 3am, 4am... witch hazel and steroid creams. I would finally just itch the area and it was unreal what relief those moments brought however as soon as you stop... SO, one night I was completely miserable and not looking forward to another sleepless night so I went to the freezer and got a bag of ice. First I tried sort of putting the bag of ice in that area and it helped only a little bit then out of complete desperation I took an ice cube out of the bag and held it directly on the area for as long as I could stand it. It was like magic, it burned from the cold feeling and then it stopped itching and I finally fell asleep.

So in short, hold an ice cube on it, it works!
