A couple months ago, my left breast started itching mostly after nursing, once I started scratching it, a red rash showed up around the areola. I went to the dr. and asked if it might have something to do with nursing (I was thinking thrush). I can't remember why, but the NP said it did not seem to be. (Unfortunately my PCP is on maternity leave so I had to see a NP). She said it looked eczema like (as in an itch that rashes) but couldn't diagnose it exactly, so she referred me to a dermatologist with whom the earliest appointment is in July! She didn't completely blow me off, as she said that any rash on the breast shouldn't be ignored, but I was still confused that she couldn't tell what it was. The only thing she said was to not use soap on the area and a sensitive skin detergent. I later found out on my own online that if it was ezcema, it's safe to use cortisone cream while bfing, so I did that for 2 weeks, the rash went away, and was only itchy occasionally, sometimes on the other breast but the cortizone cream helped.
Since it says not to use the cream for more than 2 weeks, I stopped, and about a week later I started getting itchy again, most noticeably at night after DS nurses (he's almost 3.5 yrs old, and still nurses before bedtime and early am, too...)
Now, what I thought was totally unrelated but now wondering if it could actually be untreated thrush: for a few months now, DS has had a horrible "cheek-biting" habit...but at both his first dental checkup and 3 yr checkup, the dr's seemed to think it was just that and had no explanation or suggestion (gee, I think we need new dr's for our family). He chews on the inside of his cheeks all the time, well mostly when tired or thirsty I think. He constantly has red inner cheeks that are all chewed up but nothing that looks like an actual sore nor any white patches, nor white tongue...but I can't help but wonder if it's related to what ever is going on with my breast...especially because I feel like I just had a "flare-up" in itchiness while at the same time he has increased his cheek chewing today...
Sorry to be so long and drawn out, and I know I really should seek (better) professional medical advice, but just hoping someone may have experienced this before or have some insight. Thanks!
P.s. I plan on calling the dermatologist on Monday and demanding an earlier appointment since the condition is aggravated.
