I had my 20 week ultrasound, and boy was baby uncooperative. It took nearly 15 minutes to get him to spread his legs so we could see he was a boy. Then he insisted on staying upside down and hiding his face. What a stubborn little man!

Anyway, I was lying on my back for about 20 minutes with the ultrasound tech pushing on my stomach and I started to feel REALLY sick. So, I nearly pushed her away and got up. Then I went to a chair where I fought passing out for a few minutes before actually passing out for a brief period and finally came to. Has anyone else experienced this? I felt pretty bad and scared but the tech wasn't that concerned seeming, nor did she offer any reassurances -- she did get me smelling salts and soda though. And she is a fairly young girl.

This is what upsets me most though. My doctor didn't even address this AT ALL. I mean it may be normal (IS IT?!?!?) but it's my first pregnancy and I was scared. Instead he gave me a lecture on gaining 9 pounds so far! Everything I've read indicates that gaining around 10 pounds by half way through the pregnancy is normal. But that fainting isn't. Why would he address the weight gain but not the fainting? ARGH. Now I really want to switch to a midwife homebirth.

Sorry this was a long rant. Any thoughts?

sometimes I think these drs are getting to desensitized to things and are becoming more and more insensitve. I am sorry you had to got through that. I have had a variety of bad experiences with this pregnancy as well and it is SOO annoying to have these ultrasound techs baning on your belly to move the baby like it was the side of a fish tank and they wanted to see the fish move about. It does hurt and it is rude.

If is makes you feel any better, I have gained 13 lbs at 21 weeks and also got lectured yesterday. Now I am hungerier than ever

I don't know why you would have gotten a lecture for that kind of weight gain. seems pretty on par to me.

I'm 17wks and have gained 8lbs. He must be smokin'.

I wouldn't be too worried about the passing out - that is a pretty common reaction/response to nausea/fatigue and general woosiness. Are you typically a sensitive person? Had you eaten anything before your appt? Just the prodding and poking around, i could totally see how that would make you feel all weird.

It is NOT to late for you to switch drs!! Go get thee to a midwife!!

Lunking here...saw you on new posts.

Your OB sounds like the one I had at the beginning of my pregnancy. I swear I had to hear more about my weight gain than anything else. (I gained 45 lbs. in all) I switched care to a midwife at 32 weeks and never heard a single word about my weight again. She wouldn't even say my weight out loud to me after I was weighed unless I asked. She was much more concerned about how I was feeling and that I was eating healthy! If this dr. seems more concerned about your weight gain than your well-being, I would say it's time to switch care providers.

I agree with PPs. . .my MW has me weigh myself at every appt, but then just writes it down and has never made a comment. We did have a conversation about diet and getting enough protein. . .she just wants me to eat healthy and doesn't give a hoot about the weight. Some people gain more and lose it quickly, some people gain less no matter how hard they try. . .its very individual and you are totally within normal.

The fainting is scary (has happened to me, but pre-pg, I got an inoculation--last time I let them talk me into a shot--and immediately had a fainting spell. They never could say why, stress or low blood sugar were there only brilliant suggestions). Could have been low blood pressure from laying flat on your back and then getting up quickly. But it does suck that they didn't really address it.

Go for a MW if that's what you really want! Congrats on the BOY!!!
Sounds like everything is normal to me, so celebrate your little boy and look around for a MW.

Saw this on new posts...

Get a midwife if you can! The only time I heard anything about my weight was when I DIDN'T gain anything! They expressed concern over my diet a few times when I would admit to eating too much ice cream, but never lectured me about it!

Even if the fainting is normal your ob should have addressed your concerns - even if only to reassure you.

Even if you don't get a midwife I recommend finding a new OB.

congrats on the BOY!

yeah, i think your reaction to the U/S sounds totally normal--i remember feeling very similar when i had u/s done in the past. lying on your back does often make you woozy and/or cuts off blood flow, hence the faintness.....right?

however, a lecture for 9lbs of weight gain at 20w???
if anything i'd think you'd get congratulated for gaining a perfect amount, if not lecured for not gaining *enough*

nothin wrong w/changing care providers now!

congrats on your boy!

i'm sorry you were treated so poorly by your health care providers. this is unacceptable. frankly, i think your OB was acting like a jerk.
9lbs is on the LOWER side of average weight gain for this far along in your pregnancy!!! UGH!!! it makes me so angry when people get this kind of "care", or un-care.

I don't remember how much I gained with ds by the same time but I know I was gained way more than I was supposed to (I gained 50 lbs all together) and my OB would give me a hard time about weight gain but never once did she ask about my diet (which was pretty healthy). I think it's so silly that they put so much focus on weight gain and don't even care about diet.

I have a mw this time around and she doesn't even ask about my weight gain or weigh me- it's something that she's not that concerned about. I've been weighing myself at home at I've gained 13 lbs at 17 weeks so far!

I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain, just do your best to eat healthy and it will all work out fine. I would worry about the care your getting from your doctor though, he doesn't sound that nice. You would probably be much happier with a mw.

Cripes - I'm only 18wks and I've gained 13lb!!!!!!

As for the feeling faint - with the tech pushing on your belly its possible she put more pressure than normal on the vena cava and abdominal aorta - the two major blood vessels that feed/return blood to/from the lower half of your body. It likely caused your blood pressure to do funny things and therefore the nausea/passing out feeling. Also, the pushing around can push on your stomach itself (all your insides just push all over) and THAT can cause the nausea. All of it together is just not fun.... I'd say if it doesn't happen again likely all is fine and was a result of being on your back with the pushing - I remember having that with my 3rd - I totally thought I was going to throw up on the tech.....

ChaoticMom, that was my first thought! I really thought I was going to be sick all over her and her little machine!

Thank you everyone! You've done what my doctor did not and made me feel reassured about the little fainting episode. I've honestly been so worried about it since Thursday....UGH, no fun.

Also, I took several of your advice and called a midwife! I have an appt. on Wednesday
:, so now, I just need to see about getting creative with finances. But, all in all I'm feeling way better than this morning when I posted.

You are all wonderful! Thanks again.

good for you for calling someone else!
sending good vibes that you will have the money you need. i think paying more for peace of mind and good treatment goes a long way for you, your baby, your pregnancy, birth and family, it's priceless.

If it came on when she was pushing on your belly, it sounds like vasovagal syncope - it's not abnormal, and the biggest fear is that if you pass out you don't fall and hurt yourself, so sitting down is a great response to it. Really there's nothing they can do for it, but wait for it to pass... but the doctor should have at least told you that. I've had it severely once, and lightly a couple other times... the severe one was while I was in the hospital having a procedure done, and I wound up in the ER for observation. But they didn't even do anything to me other than check my BP and blood sugars and just wait for it to pass (about half an hour?). I'd had it mildly before, but no one ever put a name to it until that time. Some people are prone to it and some aren't.

As for the weight - he's being an @$$. Find a new practitioner. Unless you're "obese", 9 pounds at 20 weeks is nothing. And even if you are "obese", it's not that big of a deal. This doctor obviously doesn't have a clue about the importance of weight gain during pregnancy - so run and find someone else who's more knowledgeable to see.

Oh, and congrats on your boy!

I'm so sorry about your insensitive doctor! I would have been really upset about all that, too! I'm embarrassingly sensitive in doctors' offices, even if I'm not there for me. And I get the vasovagal response...fainting after a pap smear, the whole nine yards. You definitely need to find someone that will be sensitive to that in case it happens again. It can be really scary.

Good for you for interviewing a midwife. You will NOT regret switching to someone that is a better fit. Good luck!

Congrats on having a boy. Boys are fun

Sorry you had to deal with that. My doctor has never ever made any mention to my weight with any of my pregnancies. I gained 55lbs with the first and in the 40's with my boys and she never said a word.

HUGS I am glad that you made an appt with a midwife

I have gained about 3 # and this happens to me quite often...it is because of the weight of the babe on your aorta...for me I can't even lie on my back in bed for a long period of time

I am sorry your provider did not explain this, it is fairly common
congrats on your BOY...I am having one too!

I'm glad you called a midwife and hopefully you and the midwife will 'click' way better!!!!

I'm still kinda chuckling over the thought of a young techie who brings smelling salts and a pregnant Mum tossing her cookies all over the machine! ooohhhhhh LOL
