I'm not entirely freaking out, but since I am an anxious person by nature, I have to ask: it's okay, maybe even normal, that my mw couldn't find DB's HB yesterday on the doppler, right?

From what I read online HB's can't be heard until 12 weeks, but I wanted reassurance from here.

Totally normal. With my first, my midwife found the heartbeat around 12 weeks, then couldn't find it again at 14. Baby was just fine, but was hiding.

Totally normal. It depends a lot on positioning of the baby, placenta, etc. There are people who've found the HB with a doppler at 8 weeks but like PP said, it often can be 12-14 weeks before it's found.

My midwife won't even ATTEMPT to find it with the doppler before 14 weeks or so, for fear of freaking mama out. Take a deep breath ... everything is fine.

Yep, that's normal. Your LO is still tiny, and even at 12 weeks, mine took forever to find! Good luck at your next appointment

Yep, very normal.

My MW could not find Quinn's HB at 12 weeks! She did find it at 16 weeks though. I just decided not to dwell on it & trust that all was well.

She did tell me that if I was stressed about it, I could come back weekly just to check for HB btwn that 12 wk appt and the 16 wk one.

My midwife won't try at 10 weeks either. The chance of not finding it are just too high, and then people worry.

try again in a few weeks and I'm sure you'll hear it thumping away

At 10 1/2 weeks my midwife struggled with the Doppler for 15 minutes before she found a heartbeat. It certainly got me freaked out!

When I mentioned it to my doula (she's an apprentice midwife) she said that 55% of babies can't be found with Doppler before 12 weeks. She said that IF a mother wants it they will try with Doppler before 12 weeks, and if nothing is heard that the mother can stop by weekly to try to hear the heartbeat until the next monthly appointment.

This certainly calmed me down a lot!

I had the same problem with ds2! It always took the nurse about 5 minutes each time to find the heartbeat, up until about 25 weeks or so.

Thanks for the encouraging words. My mw did say I can come back whenever I want to re-check. I've had pretty intense morning sickness frmo the beginning so that's made me feel better. Of course, today I woke up thinking, "Huh. How do I feel? Am I not nauseaus? Did the sandwich I ate before bed and the orange I ate before I got out of bed this morning help that much? Did the ms suddenly disappear?" My mw knew I would gauge the level of my symptoms everyday until I hear the hb. lol.

It's easy to worry - it's your baby! Just the beginning of a lifetime of worry, right? Keep in mind that your symptoms may gradually lessen as you approach the 2nd trimester

You will have more and more good days.

I'm waiting for those good days and my nausea doesn't even compare to others'! I didn't have any symptoms with DS so this is new territory for me. Still no nausea today, but I've been eating and drinking a lot more than usual so maybe that's why. I've had some cramping, which I always do off and on the first trimester. Anyway, just trying to trust my body and believe in my heart everything is ok. I'm more worried today than I have been only because I'm not gagging and dry heaving constantly.

my midwife couldn't find hb with doppler at 10 weeks after trying for a good 10 minutes. I played the "freaked out IVF patient" and she gave me an ultrasound and I saw the heart beat.

Totally normal! At 11 weeks my doctor said she'd try to find the heartbeat with the doppler, but before she even started she told me not to worry if she couldn't find it -- the babe is still super small and swimming about a lot. We did hear it, but it's normal not to hear it early on.
