I thought I read somewhere that an IUD is a safe form of birth control while breastfeeding. Is this correct? Don't you have to be on your period to get it put in or is that something else? If it is safe for bfing mothers I am definatly interested but have not gotten my periods back. Anyone know?

yes, safe during breastfeeding, as long as you are asking about anything passing through your milk. Of course, with any birth control method, there are some risks. Many women also use both regular and low dose birth control pills while breastfeeding. Reviews are mixed as to whether or not hormones pass through the milk. Sometimes they are given to women because the the chances of another pregnancy pose a greater high risk situation than the potential for small doses of hormones passing through the milk.

For me personally, I would not take the risk of any hormonal birth control, not even the hormones that are in the Mirena IUD. I too would choose the Para Guard Copper IUD while bfing. In fact, I'm 7 weeks postpartum and have an appointment for an insertion in 2 weeks. We'll see how it goes!

Good Luck!

I have the Mirena for two months and have had no problem at all with my milk supply. The doctor said it would be less painful to put it on my period because the cervix is dilated. I didn't want to wait for my period, and it didn't hurt at all. After a baby's head, and small stick going in your uterus is no big deal. I didn't want to do the copper one because I have low iron levels and didn't think I could handle the extra blood loss.
