I just ordered a jog stroller. My DD is only 3 1/2 months old, so I know it's a bit too early for us to use it.

When can we use it for walking? Jogging?

Does your little one wear a helmet (an article I read suggested this)?

Anything else I should know about exercising with my little one?

We started using our jeep jogging stroller when the baby was 3.5 mos.(not really my first choice as far as brands go, it's pretty heavy to lug up stairs, etc, but it's really good ergonomically to push--we got it second hand). I'm not a jogger but I do take long exercise walks with it. We don't use a helmet. Because we live in the city we go to the park, so there aren't any cars, except on the way. If we were walking/running on the road it might be a different story....not sure though. I have never actually seen a child in a jogging stroller wearing a helmet..... There are a lot of people around ehre who use a jogging stroller as their every day city stroller because they are so well engineered. I don't think you have to wait too long. When we got the stroller the baby had to recline a little so he wouldn't slump forward but now at 6 mos. he's totally fine sitting up and watching the world go by.

I have a BOB Revolution Duallie and I do believe it says 6 months for jogging...can't recall if it allows for younger ages while walking. I mainly walk with ours and I can't see what the harm would be in having a 3.5 mo old riding in it. The only concern I would have on my stroller is getting the straps tight enough for a baby that size. Not 100% sure that they would really secure her in. But, I haven't played around with them to proclaim this as gospel.

And, no, we don't use helmets. Although that thought had crossed mine if I ever get to the point and/or area where I am running a lot and we end up having to use areas w/ no sidewalks such as roads right outside of town.

I think walks are fine at 3.5 months. Honestly, I don't see why walking with a jogging stroller would be more likely to injure a baby than walking in a regular stroller. Seems like a jogging stroller would even be better, since there are better shock absorbers and less jostling. I think one danger is that if you trip or let go of the stroller, it could start rolling on its own, down a hill or something, but if you wear the wrist strap, it shouldn't be a problem. I think having the baby wear a helmet is a little goofy. I've never heard that recommended. I ran occasionally with both ds and dd at that age, but only on a smooth asphalt paved trail around the park--not on bumpy sidewalks or off-road trails. My pedi said it was fine. I used this: http://www.kiddopotamus.com/p_snuzz.php for extra head/body support.

I have the bob single and it says no younger than 8 weeks for walking, and 8 months for jogging. I think the reason for this is head control. At 3.5 months though, if you're jogging on flat pavement and your stroller has shock control, I don't really see it being a big problem. We had our baby in it around 2.5 months and she seemed just fine at a brisk walk on flat roads (but she was almost sitting already) with the seat reclined and blankets up her sides to keep her steady.
