Joining in the round- what am I doing wrong?

I'm trying a third time to make soaker, but this time I've really confused myself
:

The first part of the soaker is knit flat, and then is joined in the round. When I start knitting in the round, my knitting stitches and my pearl stitches are coming out on the wrong side. How it is loaded on my needles right now I'd have to purl constantly to keep my stockinette stitch instead of knit. What on earth am I doing wrong? I keep studying the diagrams, which were made by someone who is left-handed (I am right-handed) and mine look exactly like the pictures (maybe that's the problem?)...

Probably an easy answer but at this point I'm so frusterated I can't think straight

if you're using lefty instructions, as a righty you should have everything opposite. stitchguide.com has great descriptions.
when you go to join it in the round, are the purl stitches on the inside or the outside? They should be on the inside.

I thought that didn't matter with knitting????

Well, there are two different ways to look at it. There are left handed knitters who knit just like a right handed knitter would; work going from left needle to right, etc. Dominant handedness really doesn't play a factor in knitting becuase you do use both hands.

Then there are knitters (both left and right handed) who knit essentially backwards. The work goes from right needle to left needle; when a pattern says to knit 2 tog they work a SSK to get the same effect, etc. It's rare to knit this way, so I'm sure that's not the case here

AS a PP said, you need to make sure the purls are facing in when ou join. You might have to flip the work inside out to get it that way, but you won't be able to knit each round otherwise

Thank you all for saving my soaker! The pictures with the pattern are done by someone who is the "rare" left-hander, so that was my problem. Once I got the stitches loaded on the needle correctly with the pearl side on the inside of the needles, everything worked out beautifully. I made notes in the pattern so that I don't do that again! :LOL Thank you all so much!
