I personally don't think anyone should consume juice. If you want the nutrients from certain fruits the juice should be consumed along with the fibrous portions of the fruit (eat an orange, don't drink the juice). Extracting only the juice causes insulin spikes because there is no fiber to slow the absorption of the sugars into your system. I definitely wouldn't give this to a child. As for cereal, if you plan on giving grains it is usually best to start after a year because of insulin spikes and allergen issues.

I never "started" the kids on juice - they (except for the baby) have it now occasionally when we are out but it's not something that they ever need. Better to eat the fruit! Baby cereal isn't necessary either. It has virtually no nutritional value and can be used to practice with solid foods but again, is not necessary and I wouldn't start using it until at least after 6 months of age, if ever. My dd exclusively breastfed until 13 months, never liked baby cereal or baby food.

Never, cereal as a first food is kind of outdated, although very popular, advice. Juice is never necessary. My daughter started eating fruit as some of her first foods at around 8 months.

The general rule of thumb is no solids before 6 months, and even at 6 months, they should have all signs of readiness, including pincer grasp and sitting unassisted.

She hasn't had either. I tried to give her a bit of rice cereal to humor my mother a few weeks ago. She would have none of it. She'll take her pita and eggplant dip, thanks.

No plans to introduce juice. Unless she wants a swig of her daddy's grapefruit juice.

We don't do either as babies. My older two (now 6 and 4) drink juice now every now and then, but they were probably at least two before they had it, and always diluted until fairly recently. I tried cereal with my oldest at 4.5 months (dumb ped advice) and he had a horrible reaction to it. I've since learned that's not uncommon, and that it isn't great for babies.

No juice.

When DS was 12 months I started giving him some organic o's and teddy puffs. That's the only kind of cereal he's ever had.

never for juice. Lilly does like to eat oatmeal though. we just give her the same we eat. she likes it cold & thick so she can cram chunks in her mouth. we never did baby cereal though. that stuff looks like sawdust. i can't in good conscience feed that to my babe. Maya had no interest in ANY foods till she was well over a year.

We started homemade oatmeal (that I ground myself) around 10 months old. I added fruit to it, like pears, or apples, with some cinnamon. Now I make it with unsweetened almond milk. We both like it. Yum!! But we don't do the powdered instant cereal. That stuff is kinda weird.

And I once tried to get DD to drink some pear juice when she was constipated, and she wouldn't have anything to do with it. I still have another jar in the cupboard. So, um, we don't do juice either.

So I guess you could put me down for neither/never, too.

Another never here.

We waited until DD was over a year old to introduce grains and at 21 months she still doesn't love them. Juice she gets once in a very rare while. We have orange trees and she likes to suck the juice out of an orange!

That's exactly what my LO eats for breakfast now at 8 1/2 months old! I'm using Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron as my guide. I agree that juice is not a healthy choice, it's really just pure sugar w/o the fiber as a pp mentioned. I used apple juice once to jump start DD bowels (it worked
) but I would never make a habit of it.
