I have to share this little snippet with some folks who will appreciate it. I could tell dd's wheels were turning and she was definitely processing and integrating her life's story.
Background:
We're two moms. dd has been with us since she was six months old as a foster child. We adopted her at three years old, just a couple months ago. We also have ds, who we adopted after being his foster moms as well. By the way, we have a couple of books for kids on family diversity: how some kids live with a mom and a dad, some with two moms or two dads, some with grandparents, some with foster parents, etc. etc. etc. This is definitely something we talk about on occassion as a family. dd does not have access to her birthfamily (unfortunately), though we do have an open adoption with ds and we have shared with the kids that we will be visiting ds' birthfamily this June. This seems to be on the kids' minds.
Context:
dw and I usually watch tv or movies on the internet while we put the kids to sleep (sit next to them). Lately we've noticed they've been listening to our shows (before it seemed more like they took it as background noise), so dw's been trying to put on "family friendly" stuff to watch. Last night she put on the (newer version of) Parent Trap. However, there was a lot of talk by the children about wanting a mom/dad. dd started listening really intently. Then she sat up and looked at me.
DD: We don't have a dad.
Me: That's true. You have two moms.
DD: Some people have dads.
Me: That's true.
DD: I have two moms.
Me: Yep, some people have two moms...some people have two dads...some people have a mom and a dad...
DD: Some people have many moms...
Me: You're right. Sometimes people have a mom and a stepmom...
DD: I have many moms.
Me: You have two moms. Actually, you have your birthmother too.
DD: I have a birthmother.
[Pause]
DD: I have THREE moms! I have a birthmother and I have two mamas to take care of me.
Me: Yes, you do.
It was just really sweet to see her wheels turning.
