Just because I'm obsessed with chomping ice...

1439 Views 14 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Tofu the Geek
...doesn't mean I'm iron deficient, does it? This actually happened to me third trimester last time, too, so I'm not too worried. But I have pretty much shunned green veggies and red meat (although I do eat a fair amount of nut butter and beans) this whole pregnancy.

Anyone else addicted to ice? (Especially when it's exactly the right shape; for me it's the little cylinders...)

Another ice addict here! I did this with my 1st pregnancy and this one. With dd1 I was with an ob who checked my iron on every visit and I was never low. This time I'm with a midwife and when I mentioned it to her, she didn't bat an eye.

I too like certain kinds of ice! Soft ice...not too crazy about hard square ice. I know I'm probably driving everyone nuts with my crunching, but I just have such an urge!!! I think you are totally normal ;-)

I've always heard that ice chomping was a sign of being sexually frustrated.
(hee hee)

Sorry, I know your question was a serious one, but that's what came to mind when I read it.

i have done this with both of my pregnancies. it actually became slightly problematic for me (not the babies just me) as i would eat ice rather than food sometimes but as long as you are eating real food most of the time you should be okay. with my first it took a few years to overcome the habit but this time i've stopped already and he's only 6 mos.
nope, I gobbled ice my last trimester too and was fine nutritionally! It was weird, I used to CRAVE ice. and the ice from a certain machine at work.

Just watch out if you want to eat dirt (isn't that the weird pica thing?)

I LOVE ICE!

Although, I thought when we craved something, it was usually because it contained something we were deficient in... and ice is not very high in iron!
So I'm curious to hear what others think or where you heard about this possibility!

I have done this with all 3 pregnancies! With my first, I did have slightly low iron levels, but never have with my others.

After I had my first I chomped ice till she was about 6 months old. Then I stopped right away after my 2nd. We'll see what happens this time.

It's really getting on my dh's nerves, but I really can't help it!

I like the moon-shaped kind that comes out of fridge automatic ice dispensers.

Just in case, I had my iron checked when I had blood drawn a few weeks ago and it was fine, so that sets my mind at ease. I'm not sure about the other suggestion, though, but I don't think that's it.

Pica is not just dirt. It's craving unusual things. I would get it checked out, I believe ice chomping falls under symptoms of Pica....

I've been chewing ice since I was 6 months old. I can only remember stopping for a period after dd was born. And now she does it too. I've only had low iron twice in my life. Once when I stopped eating eggs and for like the last month being pregnant with dd.(Though I think it was probably on the low side of normal, because I wasn't fatigued like the first time.) I've heard that it is considered pica though.

I agree. I craved ice with my second pg and at the time my sil was a nursing student and told me to talk to my OB about it.
I'm eating ice right now. I crave it 3rd trimester with all my pregnancies. No idea why but it's great to combat heartburn

I craved it during my third tri with ds, and so far during this pregnancy, I've had a few cravings but not an everyday thing like with ds.

I did have my iron checked and I was on the low side of normal, so I'm supplementing with iron this time around just in case.

My fav kind of ice are those little cylinders too, so easy to crunch!
Just be careful, chomping on ice can put cracks in your teeth that make them more sensitive later on. My mom is a freak about stopping me or anyone else who chews ice & telling us that.

Yes chewing ice is very hard on your teeth. I used to have the obsession when I was a teenager. I chewed ice for years and ended up weakening one tooth so much that part of it chipped off and crumbled in my mouth. It was super scary. My dentist fixed up my tooth and I quit chewing ice!
