I hope this isn't an annoying post...though it is sort of self-serving. I am very very far from extended family and am sort of a homebody, so I don't get out much to compare/talk.....so I am wondering if you all will be me buddies for a minute and tell me if I look huge for 21 weeks. I feel huge: hard to walk up stairs, hard to squat or pick something up off the ground, and feeling like my uterus is already invading my lung space. I don't know, but I have an inkling I may be having twins. I did from the beginning. Call me weird, but I am really excited by the idea of twins. I didn't feel like this till at least mid-3rd trimester with my other 2 pregnancies. Not to mention I have gained almost 20 lbs, 12 of those in the past 6 weeks.

Talking to my mother, there is a fairly good history of them in her family. 11 sets between her mother and father's siblings and their children, my grandmother being one herself.

So I thought I would post a picture and you all can tell me I am fine, have wishful thinking, whatever! You all know how much we like to talk babies and birth, so here is my only real opportunity. Thank you all for putting up with me

BTW, I do have an ultrasound on Wednesday to see what is going on since I have been measuring large in previous weeks and now am about 5-6cm over. With both prevoius pregnancies, I was under or right on the mark, but then again this is babe #3 for me.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rrent=preg.jpg
Sorry for the flash...

Well, just for grins, you can try looking at this belly pic of me taken right on 20 weeks. I definitely have twins in there! How do you think that compares with your belly?

As far as family history, it does sound like a lot. There is a known genetic tendency toward fraternal twins, while the "whys" of identicals are not known. Typically, they say the fraternal twins are the ones that "run in families" but there are some families with strong tendencies toward identicals so it's not that there is NO genetic component there, it just is unknown if it does exist.

The rate of identical twins (across cultures and races) has remained rather consistent, while incidences of fraternal twins are on the rise. That's a function of both assisted reproductive technologies AND the greater frequency of women becoming pregnant in their mid-to-late thirties. I have read that the chances of releasing two eggs at ovulation and conceiving fraternal twins rises considerably from age 35 to 40, then drops off a bit after 40. Not that women over 40 DON'T, but the prime period is supposed to be 35-40, and the more women who are conceiving children in that age span, the more likely it is for the number of spontaneously conceived fraternal twins to be on the rise. Plus the impact of more fraternal twins through IVF and fertility treatments.

There is some twin action in my family. Let me think for a minute: my grandfather was a twin (fraternal, he had a twin sister.) My grandmother (his wife) had a pair of twin sisters....I am not certain if Helen & Hester were identical or fraternal twins. I have a big book of family history that covers all the descendents but I would have to look through it to see whether there were more twins in subsequent generations.

My sister had twins (but they were adopted!) So unrelated, but I couldn't resist.

My husband's sister had fraternal twins, but that (paternal history of fraternals) would seem irrelevent since MY genetic heritage would be what matters in family history of fraternals, since two eggs are involved and his family has nothing to do with that. (Although my twins are not fraternal.)

But it seems possible that where a possible genetic connection is concerned with monozygotic twins ("identicals"), either side of the family could come into play, since they really do not know what causes the phenomenon to happen in the first place.

I tell people (they always ask if twins run in the family) that we do have some family history of twins, but that our twins are identical and there's no known connection between family history & identical twins.

At least you don't have too long to wait until Wednesday. Be sure to post when you know something!!

OP - I look about the same, and I'm pretty sure it's only one, but I'm on my fourth pregnancy.

I think you look pretty normal but that means squat!

I too am getting the shortness of breath. Last night I was carrying huge ds to his bed and he was asleep. I asked dd to move the pillow on his bed so I can lay down and please hurry up because I can't breath. She asked why I couldn't breath and I said something like my arm and stomach are full of baby!

I think that this is the way I have been. That is why I am so surprised at how fast and early I have ballooned. I can quite vividly remember still wearing my tight jeans and stretchy t-shirts at this point and sort of complaining that I wasn't showing. People would say they would never had known I was pregnant if I hadn't said so

This time has been so different, that is really my only basis to go on. There is another mama on the June board that has pics of her twin belly and we look remarkably similar, I think. But who know, maybe my body said, OK I'm not hiding this baby this time...

You look about the same as me and I am 21 weeks. I am measuring about 4-6 weeks ahead and only have one
