Hi,

I just got an iud in yesterday it is the copper one with no hormones...I am experiencing cramping and quite a lot of bleeding although not red blood it is kinda brown and crusty...is this old blood maybe? I finished my period last week? Also it was my first period after loss and d & c...How long does the bleeding last?

Where y'all happy with a coil?

i can't answer your question because i don't have one yet, but can you tell me how long a copper one is good for? i'm actually looking at getting mirena, and just started a thread about it. can i ask how it felt to get it inserted? not too painful i hope!

Hmm, are you sure it's blood? I seem to remember this happening when I had mine inserted, but I think it was from something the doc used while inserting it. (Disinfectant or something maybe? I dunno.) I just remember her telling me I might have a brownish discharge for a couple days. And that's how long it lasted for me. 2 days.

I also have the copper one sans hormones and mine is good for 3 years. It hurt a little going in, but only for a second and I had pretty uncomfortable cramping for most of that day. Nothing worse than an icky period though, (but I don't usually have cramps during periods, so I'm a wimp about it.)

Well, hopefully it is over now or you sought medical attention if it didn't end... I would say that some bleeding/cramping is normal for 1-2 days but if you were soaking lots of pads or having a fever or anything you should definitely call a doctor.

I was happy with my IUD (had it between kids) although I did have a lot of spotting and liked combining it with FAM so I knew what was going on with my body more. Ultimately decided not to get another one after I had L because I felt like we could rely on FAM alone this time.

To ccasanova, my copper one would have been good for 10 years and the Mirena is usually good for 3-5 I think. I had almost no discomfort with either insertion or removal and actually was surprised each time when the doctor said he was done and began to stand up, remove gloves, etc. The day of insertion I just had a tiny bit of cramping and maybe a little spotting. I think it's good to be prepared for the worst but also to know it is often no big deal.

I had really really heavy bleeds with mine. And when I went to get it out (to start TTC) it was found to have wandered. It was then that I realized that when I thought I was pg back in the winter I was and that I had likely miscarried. They make these sound like nothing could go wrong, but they aren't perfect.

I forgot to mention, heavy periods were an issue for me for the first 10 months. I mean heavy in the sense that I was changing a super plus tampon every 2 hours in the middle of the night. (I used to wear nothing at night because my periods were so light.) It seems a lot better now though.
