I was just reading a post about WIC and how they react if you dont vaccinate, and how some people had them get irrate. That is terrible. But I know how you feel. I just wanted to share my experience with having to stand my ground on NO VACCINATIONS.

I have 19 month old twins. Last June when they were about 8 months old, I got a call one day out of the blue just after we had moved from CPS (Child Protective Services!). I was shocked. I was on the phone paniking, ANYONE who was ANYONE knows I love my children and my children are very well taken care of! I am sitting on the phone with her, its the 8th, my MIL died the 5th, and we were arranging her funeral (my husband is the oldest boy, technically a twin, but ya know!).

I was racing trying to figure out WHO would have called on me. Who was fighting with me, who would do this!?

Suddenly it hit me. My son was in the hospital 2 times hospitalized in the last 2 months for ear infections. Ear infections? What? You ask me WHY for ear infections would he be hospitalized?! Because, I dont vaccinate. And of course we ALL know ear infections turn into meningitis, and kill us. Right? Well, that is what they told us. Since my son is not vaccinated, his ear infections will turn into menigitis, and he is only getting them because his body wasnt strong enough to fight them off on there own, because he isnt vaccinated. Vaccinated kids have stronger immune systems, right? Uhg, make me puke.

I blurted out on the phone, This is because I dont vaccinate, isnt it? She said, well, can you tell me why you dont? So I KNEW it was sitting RIGHT in front of her. I said "Well for starters my husbands mom died 3 days ago after having epilepsy since she was 11 after a series of high fevers. I will not give my children anything that purposly causes a fever!" Of course, there are MANY more reasons I dont, but I want going to convince her of anything.

Thus started many a conversations with these people. I talked to our "worker" on the phone since we had moved from Macomb (first lady) I had to get Oakland county involved, so we had another man. He read the report. The report was BALOGNA (I hate balogna, btw!). It said he was admitted for possible meningitis (UHH NO, he had a ear infection! GRRRRR). And that we didnt fill a presciption. This was the basis of the report. This is how they got away filiing it, since they KNEW they couldnt soley based on the fact that he wasnt vaxed. I never got a prescription. They kept him an extra day with IV antibiotics because he wouldnt take them orally the first time, so they believed that is why it came back again so soon. They sent him home free, and fine. But now there was this imaginary perscription I didnt fill, AND a nurse that was supposed to come to my house to check on him?! WTHECK?! It was an EAR INFECTION. Kids with ear infections DONT get private nurses to check on them! I was furious. I signed all the papers to release medical records. And they found out I was right, and appologized and said they should have never been called.

But I was still violated (I wont go into all the stuff I made them do to get into my house. It is against the law for them to intrude the way they do. They are lucky they only had to come back 3 times to get in, my husband didnt even want them in then. They need a search warrent to come in if you refuse, which they would NEVER had obtained on what they had on us, but we let them in anyway, mainly because I just wanted it to be over).

I now have a "permanant record" if you will, because a doctor called CPS on me for endangering my child. Makes me sick, I feel I have to walk on egg shells, and the day I have laundry on the floor is the day they are going to come back.

Anyways, Just thought I would share. If anyone wants to know what "hospital/health system" did this, let me know. My "worker" told me the name of the doc who called, because I kept insisting it was my ped. He said no, it was a doctor blank, who I couldnt remember but I had seen so many.

BTW, Elijah got another ear infection the next month (APril, May, then the end of June, again). I was to scared to take him in. After intervention in April, and May, we did nothing for it in June. Only things to help with comfort. And guess what? His ear poped, and oozed pretty bad. Drained itself, and NO ear infections since. The meds supressed it. The ear itself did what it needed to do, and I am now fully confident our bodies work very well on there own (I do believe sometimes we need some help, but not as much as docs want you to think!).

Thanks for reading to here, if you made it!

Erika, I am so very sorry you and your family went through that. I have fought with CPS too, though not on the scale that you had to. I understand how angry and betrayed it can make you feel.

It shocks and saddens me that families are harassed for making educated choices, while so many children are neglected and abused.

As a midwife I am a mandatory reporter if I suspect child endangering or abuse. While not about your experience, I did have cause to suspect that a "pregnant" woman who interviewed me was actually schizophrenic. She very matter of factly told me how her baby had been switched with another in the hospital and then again at the doctor's office and came back to her in different clothes, hair cut, different color. Just a bunch of stuff that really made me worry. dad was non plussed about everything she said and seemed to be a bit slow.
I called CPS just to ask them to look into things and spent 45 minutes on the phone with them grilling me about why I called the wrong phone number (she couldn't tell me where in the phone book the corect number is listed), why I was calling so late (phone was busy for more than an hour earlier that day), and why I didn't get the children's names, where they went to school, the mom's address, etc. Then she proceeded to tell me how if anything happened I would be held liable. Tried to give her the phone number, but she said that wouldn't do any good.
For heaven's sake, it was just an interview. The chidren weren't brought to the visit and I found out afterwards that the woman wasn't even pregnant, although she looked about 20+ weeks.

I am not sure why I was treated so poorly when I tried to do the right thing for a family that obviously needed some outside help and why you were treated so badly when you did nothing wrong.

BTW: warmed garlic oil is a great comfort and is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. I had one child (DS#2) who had chronic ear infections. We used homeopathics with him and DS#3 (only 2 ear infections and he's never been vaccinated). I wonder if some one would try to link his pectus to the lack of vaccine (smirk smiley if there was one).

Sorry you have had to go through this.

So sorry to hear about this. Someone else on MDC posted this link a while back...maybe it is worth looking into for future. http://www.fightcps.com/

I had to explain our non-vax stance to DHS and Medicaid once when we were on it for ds (we didn't have other insurance at that time). They were suprisingly okay with the fact after I explained that myself and two other members of my family have had severe allergic reactions to prior vaccinations. I explained that we would not be risking ds life by exposing him. They dropped it.

Prayers are with you!

I have to post one other thing in reference to wic- I was on wic years ago and it was a pardon the language but GHETTO place to go... well i was laid off in Jan so we went back on wic.

This woman went off because i am cloth diapering- how they never see it. then on the food questionaires- she asked me if i was being honest even quized my 3 year old about his veggies- (my kids love veggies and eat a lot of them which she thought was WIERD)... then she wanted to give me formula even though we are excl bf'g... I was the WTF... so I calmly corrected her and asked if we needed supervisor to come in...

She also made comments about my discipline (non-violent- reassuring/redirecting of my 3 year old who was scared of getting his finger poked) adn I finally looked at her and said "look lady when you give birth to my kids you can have say until then I suggest you shut the Heck up." I would have liked to have said more but my 3 year old is a freaking sponge...

Im in the midst of dealing with cps myself and I too can vouch that they're a nightmare. I have 3 special needs boys and my oldest is 9 and until about a month ago was not toilet trained. He's seen by numerous drs and specialists for his conditions and they were trying to figure out what was causing it but that wasn't enough for his school...twice. First we had a montessori school call on us about it and then a month ago the public school (we transferred him because of the other school calling and making up horriffic lies) called again. Ive had to provide EVERY word that ANYONE says to me in writing to cps otheriwse they're petitioning to remove my kids, it's insane!! We had the kids' therapist, her supervisor, and a leison involved and it made the cps worker really mad that I didn't just lay back and let her walk on me. The cps system is garbage as far as I can see (Im in Wayne Co).

I'm not in your tribe. (New Englander here) But I have to agree. CPS has issues. I've fought my own battles with them and lost 3 step children to the state as a result. As a newly non vaxer and homeschooler I worry about running into them again.

As a mom of a so called special needs child (now 21`and very much independant) I have had run ins with cps over the years. We were living in a very small town and every one knew every body so how they decided I needed "help" I can't phathom but the first time I got a call from this "sweet"lady who just wanted to stop by my home and see how I was doing. My husband had recently died(!) and they recieved a report that my daughter was not recieving physical therepy. Ultimately I let them come, just to get them off my back and asked them if they had contacted her therepists. They had not. I then proceeded to inform them that she had indeed been recieving regular therepy, although they had suspended it for a few weeks while she got new braces. OH! But did they give up..no. The "sweet " lady calls again and asked me if I needed any "help". I told her no and she should quit wasting her time on me and turn her attention on the many kids who are dropping through the cracks in the system.. Mind you, through all this I had graduated from Parent Leadership Training and was an active participant in Early On, a support group through the intermediate school district. I am NOT the village idiot, so they say.
My second encounter with these people was when I decided to home school (6th grade) and I had hired a tutor to help her catch up with all that she hadn't learned in public school. The teacher got a call from "them" and I happened to be sitting there, so she hung up and told me who it was. I called back immediantly and said" I heard that my daughter's name just came up in conversation. I will be in your office in ten minutes" and he said "can you bring your daughter?" and I said "I sure can!" so I just walked right into his office and sat down and I stated that home schooling is not illegal in the state of Michigan and he had to agree with me. I asked him who had made a fuss over this although I had a pretty good idea and he said he had recieved a complaint and they have to investigate all complaints, whether they agree with them or not( I find they do not always investigate!!) and then he just laid the letter of complaint down where I could see it and talked to Sabre for a few minutes, said that he could see that there was no problem here and that was the end.
Sorry about the rant, but it has been my experience that you have to always stay a step ahead of these people, that they may "mean well" but usually have no clue reguarding the day to day lives of families with special needs kids or who choose alternative methods and if you can outfact them and stand your ground without losing your cool, there is usually nothing they can do, really!!
Also, I second the use of garlic oil for ear infections..Works great, soothes the pain and heals instead of masking the problem..

I have to say, this scares the bejesus out of me.

My husband and I are pregnant with our first child and have decided to refuse the K shot and eye drops, unless they are absolutely necessary at the time of birth (infection or bleeding present).

I've heard that CPS can actually cause problems because of this, though. I live in Genesee County and although I haven't heard of many problems here, I don't know many people who have made the same decisions we have.

We are still on the fence about VAXing, and will be until I can find more solid information. I know that I am not convinced it needs to be done right away, so will delay until I am confident of my decisions.

However, I am wondering if I am setting myself up for legal issues....

Just a side note: I have a meeting with WIC on Wednesday to get some help while I am in school. Am I opening up a can of worms, here???

Congrats on your pregnancy Mandy.

From what I understand, your child's pediatrician has to be on board with you declining the vitamin K shot and eye drops. If the ped. thinks those are necessary, then you have to get them. If you refused, and took your child home despite the ped's recommendations, the hospital would call CPS because you did someting AMA (Against Medical Authority?)

We made sure when I had my son in a hospital, that we found a ped. that would be just fine with our declining unnecessary medical intervention. That would definitely be something to question any potential ped. about.

Good luck!

We had the family doctor on board with refusing the eye ointment and they still called CPS on us. :
But, if you sign the waiver they have to let you refuse no matter what the doc says. At least that is how I understand it
