Kangaroo carry advice?

510 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Tupelo Honey
My son is 3 months old now, and very ready for the kangaroo carry, but contrary to my siggy icon, I haven't been able to do it quite right.

I use a ring style sling, and I'm used to carrying him in a sitting up position, mostly facing to the side, with the sling behind his head and down his back. I can't figure out how to get him facing straight outwards, and I think he would really like that position much more, because he could see a full 180 degrees in front of me.

Any advice on how to get him in that position? I've looked at the wearyourbaby.org site already, and I've also read Dr. Sears instructions for it, and I seem to need a little more instruction.

...and should his legs be in sortof a taylor sitting position in there?

I've found that Leo is more comfortable turned a bit to the side, actually. I think it gives him a bit more room. Also, when he's facing directly straight out, he tends to get hunched forward, since he's too little to really be able to sit up straight. So I like that he can lean back more when he's a bit sideways.

I realize this doesn't answer your question... all I can think of is that when you put him in, to turn him the other direction so he faces straight out. That seems too simple a solution though?
Here is a link with drawings and a video

also check at www.mamatoto.org

I think one of the keys is to pull the extra fabric up in front so it comes up over his feet and he has a nice smooth seat.

This is a great position-I love it and DS still likes it 7 mos.

Look at her front facing pics-they are very good too
My Kangaroo carries with a ring sling never really worked properly with DS#2... Even if it worked at first, I later would have to keep readjusting.
Ok, maybe I am ring sling impaired, but I just did not find that the time I spent putting the sling one and adjusting it was worth it - I am quicker even with a long wrap!!!

Anyways, after I discovered cotton pouches a new world opened up to me. It is soooo easy to put my baby in and out. Kangaroo carriers work like a dream in a pouch!!! I highly recommend one.

Some good ones to try would be Hotslings (www.hotslings.com) , or a HeavenlyBundle (http://www.heavenlybundle.com/) - as nice as a HS, but cheaper
Oh, you tempt me too much! I wanna buy another sling sooooo bad! I'd love to try a Hotsling or the like, but I'm trying really hard to be happy with the one ring sling I have (even though I want all kinds of neat fabrics, and to try all kinds of slings).

Anyway, thanks for all the great links. I went to the very first one (zolowear) and learned what I think I needed to know. It suggested pulling the top side of the sling through the rings to pouch it up, and this had never occured to me before. I can hardly wait to go home and try it out. I also hadn't tried making the pocket with the sling, and then picking him up to pop him in.

I know they sound like simple solutions, but I was totally at a loss... which, I've found, occurs much more often now that I'm a mama.
I knows what you mean...
Still, I love pouches so much that I would like all to try them. I forgot to give you one more link before. http://www.hightopbabydesigns.com/store/ . These are the Loveys and are even more affordable. They sell for 14.50 shipped and you can also take 10% off that until June 30th (when the FreatDiaperHunt sale will end)

Just give in and try some more! You will be so glad you did. Honestly I used to think everyone was nuts to have more than one carrier, and now look at me... 2 pouches, a ring sling, a Mei Tai, a stretchy wrap and a woven wrap on the way. Yesterday I really did use three of them!

If you don't want to spend the money, check out www.thebabywearer.com - there's a For Sale or Trade forum. You can get great deals.

Off topic: do I remember your username from theknot.com? I used to lurk on the Baby board there but since I found MDC I don't think I'll ever go back there.

Soooo true!!! When I discovered Babywearing when DS#2 was born 2 years ago I only had a ring sling and made it work though I was not very happy with it. But then again, I did not want to spend money on more than one carrier

This time around I have tried SO MANY different carriers!! Mostly what I do is to trade-to-try or buy-and-sell. This way I have been figuring out what work and what does not. So far I have settled with a Freehand MT, a Heavenly Bundle Pouch + a Lovey water pouch on the way and my newest adition: Didymos wrap
: I know, very expensive, but I just had to see what all the rave was about. And if it does not wor for me, I can always sell it again

And YES - I used them ALL almost every day!!

I do a modified kangaroo carry. My rings are on the right . I place him in the sling with him facing at a slight angle to the right. His feet are more under the ring area than in front of him. I still cross his legs. He can lean back into my left shoulder and I support him with my left arm. It hands free for short periods but I always have my left arm around him. He is basically put in the carrier just like a regular kangaroo carry but rotated a little to the right. Does all that make sense?
Well, I tried it out and it worked great-- I think. He was facing straight out, and his feet were crossed and everything. He was still a little wobbly, from side to side, and front to back, so I held him in when I bent over, but mostly it was hands-free. I guess he'll get less wobbly as he gets older, and maybe as I learn to tuck him in a little snugger.

But I was wondering about his feet. They seemed to be pretty uncomfortable in front of him. They were up a little high, so it seemed that his abdomen was a little scrunched, and I would think that'd be uncomfortable. He was pretty content for awhile though, so I figured it was okay. After about 20 minutes, he started to cry and I took him out, and I wondered if the feet scrunched thing got to him. Is there a better way to do it, or will they always seem a little too curled up?
I have DS in a sitting-up-cradle-position. He is is half facing out and half leaning back, IYKWIM... This way his legs can be more relaxed.
Some babies prefer to have their feet straight up in front of them, almost like a jackknife position. I always did the legs crossed, though. A tip to add stability is to reach under their bum and slide it forward in the fabric so that he's forced to lean back against you more. Then your boobs make a great headrest, lol.
