I trimmed a few of my prefolds last night per Karen's instructions, I thought, what the heck, they are only prefolds if I don't like them, no big deal.

GEESH I LOVE LOVE LOVE them!! It cuts down on the bulk in the front SOO much! Honestly in a CPF with a snappi it is like he is in a disposable bulk wise! NO KIDDING!!

I did it a BIT different since I have a boy who sleeps on his belly mostly I took the cut off part and folded it at the first fold (where the two sections meet) and sewed it there in the front so it is not only the extra 4 layers up front but 10 full layers there plus the regular 6 for the pad, so that is 16 layers across my boys wet zone, and still getting the trim fit!! YAY Karen!! You rock~

Geez oh Petes. That wasn't exactly what I was expecting to see when I logged in this morning. I'm glad it's working for you Marnie
. Can you take pics of what you did -- i can't seem to get a picture in my head from your description. I'd love to add a pic and explanation to my page for anyone else who wants to try it that way.

BTW -- where in Michigan are you? We're in Ann Arbor.

No way! Your in Michigan!? I didn't have a clue! I thought you lived in a far off land with the other diapering godesses

I am in Ludington, which is about 4 hours from you, however Joe visits a neurologist in Ann Arbor, and my uncle has season tickets to the big house of course! (GO BLUE) we will have to get together sometime when we come down to U of M!

I will take pictures later today, I am doing more tonight, the one I have that I tried is actually ON Joe, but I will get ya some pictures!

i've been thinking about trying this as well, but also am considering adding a cute print of some sort to the middle of the outside of the trimmed prefold (if that makes sense). since i never use the 3rd leg on the snappi i think it would work out really good and maybe get ds to pick out a cloth diaper over the sposies with big bird and such on them.

When I trimmed mine, the first serge I made to cut off the extra piece, I have made it so it finished that edge off. Does that make sense? And then I layed that seperate piece down the middle with the raw edge up and serged across the top. That way you only have to serge twice and you are done.

I am sorry but I can't seem to get this in my head, I got the serge the cut part off (that is what I did) but you still have to serge down the raw edge of the peice you serged off unless your serging it back on the long way? (which wouldn't make much sense since that is how you just took it off?) anyway I am on some pain killers so I might not be functioning right?

Serger recommends anyone? -inexpensive, for light use

TIA
I got my serger from walmart, it was like $235 and it works great, I use it quite a bit as well!
I also have a brother sewing machine which I was not all that thrilled with (it has broke once already) ~

Marnie ~ Gotcha. Great idea! I'll add some of your pics to the trimming page (with credit, of course
).

I think Zanymom is saying you use the serger to cut off and serge the doubler piece at the same time. Then you just have the raw edge of the main diaper to finish, and you can serge the doubler on at the same time you're finishing that edge. Make sense?

Campingmumma ~ by all means get a serger if you want this as an excuse, but it can be done with a sewing machine

did I mention that I am totally stoned on pain meds ATM? LOL yes that makes a LOT more sense now! LOL DUH, and the ones that are coming out of the dryer are up on the chopping block, makes a ton of sense and I will do them that way!
(although not sure I should use the serger in my state....LOL might serge my fingers to the diapers that wouldn't be cool!

I don't trim off a ton, just enough not to have to fold it over. I honestly can't ever see needing the prefolds longer, I have talked to lots of people with lots of different sized kids, all of them have said the prefolds are too long no matter how big the baby is, I just can't imagine needing a rise the size of a toddler prefold, not ever. LOL If I some day do, I will either buy some more prefolds (thank goodness they are cheap) or trifold them in a wrap. But I have found that by the time they get too short in the rise they are way to small in the waist to pin or snappi anyway. ~

Just my 2 cents on this.. I wanted to try it very badly, but I actually put a prefold on my little girl yesterday and took note of how much I fold down a premium prefold. I use to fold down 3.5-4.5 inches.. but now, I fold down about two inches. We fold down in the back though. My baby at 20 months and 21-22lbs has a 17 inch rise with a diaper on. I don't think that's an unusually high rise is it? Anyway... that's our bleached prefolds.. our unbleached, I fold about three inches. Either way, by the time I trim them, the bit that I trimmed off would seem really rediculously small to serge back into the diaper. Although, I have thought about maybe a two layer hemp fleece topped with microfleece doubler sewn in like the extrta piece woudl have been.. that might be nice since our prefolds don't seem to be quite enough diaper most days. I just wanted to say that if I had trimmed my prefolds about four or five months ago, they would definitly be too low in the rise now so if you are in a very limited budget, don't do this early on in the prefold size range. Same is true for infant prefolds.. when she outgrew them, we were no longer folding them down even though in the beginning, I wanted to make them all shorter because I just couldn't imagine that she would ever fill them out. I do think that if you use preium prefolds in pocket diapers and the folding down thing just doesn't work well in your pockets, the trimming thing would just be awsome for that. Also, I plan to use these prefolds on the next baby so if I trimmed them now, then they wouldn't fit a smaller baby later without folding down.. I guess I could fold down the other side that doesn't have the piece serged to it, but that seems to defeat the purpose. Can you tell I really wanted to do this and put a lot of thought into it? *LOL*.. yes, prefolds are inexpensive, but I'm SOOOOOO cheap I just can't bring myself to do it

Serger.. do NOT get the brother from wal-mart.. I took back THREE that broke within 2-3 months of purchase. That's the good thing about buying from wal-mart.. you can always take it back. After the third, I got my money back and bought a kenmore from sears. It the same thing as their janome. It's a low priced machine that does a good job. It does better with three thread serging on very thick layers than it does with 4 threads, but I've had it a year the end of the month.. sure beats 2-3 months.

Yeah I can see your point on the trimming, however maybe it is because I have short thick boys Joe out grows the width before he is out growing the rise, but the toddler PF I trimmed I tried on my potty trained 3 year old and it fit him in the rise, so I think it should be okay!
