We have a "no shoes" policy. All shoes and outer clothing come off in the entryway. We have a shoe box and a closet there for things, so it does make it easier.

No shoes here, and I *try* to have "front door" shoes and "back door" shoes - meaning that if ds wants to run outside in back, there are shoes ready for him to do that and he doesn't have to go to the front door and put his shoes on and then walk thru the house to get to the back door.
A friend of mine makes up a bucket of soapy water and keeps it at the back door for the kids to wash off their feet before coming inside. I like that idea.
Also - I just implemented this so we'll see how it goes. During the day, shoes come off OUTSIDE the door and left outside. It drives me crazy when they come in, take of shoes and sand spills out all over my floor.

In theory, this all works. But dh trudges thru the house on occassion and I just cringe.
Oh, and I have a sign on my front door that says, "no shoes, please."
Geez, you'd think I was a neat freak with a super clean house or something. Not.

We also do the "no shoes" rule.. and if pants are muddy, they also come right off at the door (for my little ones.. I don't make adults strip at my front door

Having 3 kids....always one seems to sneak in real quick with muddy or dirty shoes...then there is our dog....

The other day I went to my friend's NEW house and she had the front door locked. She says she keeps it locked so the kids can't get in except through the garage and then they take their shoes off in there. I thought it was an awesome idea and now that is what I do with my kids.
We are in mud city because we have no yard with grass, just dirt right now. We also have had huge mud lakes and the kids not only get muddy they get wet. One puddle was so big...the kid blew up their raft and were floating in it.
