Kellogg was a total fruit loop (er, excuse the pun) who pushed circumcision as a "cure" for masturbation, but I don't know why intactivists would boycott the company now... he's been dead for a long, long time now.

I do always think about it when I eat Corn Flakes. It's a little surreal.

Speaking of which, anybody ever see "The Road to Wellville?"

Hmmmm...actually W.K., John's brother was the founder of the Kellogg company. They developed the cereal together but had a falling out and W.K. went on to form the Kellogg company. It seems a bit far fetched to boycott a company for something that the founder's brother said in 1888. It would seem a bit far fetched even if it was the founder who said it since it was so long ago. I don't agree with what he said (obviously) but it was 1888. From what I understand, John Kellogg was a weird dude anyway.

Here is part of the wiki article on John Kellogg: "With his brother, Will Keith Kellogg, they started the Sanitas Food Company to produce their whole grain cereals around 1897. A standard breakfast then was eggs and meat eaten by the well off. The poor ate porridge, farina, gruel, and other boiled grains. John and Will eventually argued over the addition of sugar to the cereals and in 1906 Will started his own company called the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, which eventually became the Kellogg Company. They never spoke to each other again. John then formed the Battle Creek Food Company to develop and market soy products. John did not invent the concept of the dry breakfast cereal. That honor belongs to Dr. James Caleb Jackson who created the first dry breakfast cereal in 1863, which he called Granula. A patient of John's, Charles William Post would eventually start his own dry cereal company selling a rival brand of corn flakes."

i believe the founder had a hand in helping create a tool to make circumcizing easier.

that is from my memory, i know i read more specific on it a few months ago, but basically it is the equivlant of creating the gomco clamp.

"A remedy [for masturbation] which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision, especially when there is any degree of phimosis. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anæsthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment, as it may well be in some cases. The soreness which continues for several weeks interrupts the practice, and if it had not previously become too firmly fixed, it may be forgotten and not resumed."
~ Dr John Harvey Kellogg, Plain facts for old and young: embracing the natural history and hygiene of organic life, 1877

From wikipedia;Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (February 26, 1852 - December 14, 1943) was an American medical doctor in Battle Creek, Michigan who ran a sanitarium using holistic methods, with a particular focus on nutrition, enemas and exercise. Kellogg was an advocate of vegetarianism, and is best known for the invention of the corn flake breakfast cereal with his brother.

Think the irony..holistic methods, vegetarianism....and painful circumcisions for boys...

Oh, he wasn't the only one thinking this way. Medical literature from that time is full of similar remarks - circumcision - and a painfull one - is cure for masturbation!
