Kidney stone recovery

2201 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  eila
I just had a bout of kidney stones...a terrible experience, and I'm still feeling some pain/discomfort in the kidney area. Has anyone else suffered kidney stones or other kidney problems?

I'm wondering what I can do to help my kidney and liver recover from the stones and pain killers. I unfortunately had to manage the pain with vicodin (tylenol plus hydrocodone), which probably put quite a burden on my liver...though my docs and mw reassured me that managing the pain (so I could eat, drink and sleep) was important and that it wouldn't affect the baby as long as I kept below the limit. I'd rather not hear from everyone how that was a terrible decision (what's done is done)....right now I'm more concerned with getting myself back to full health.

Can anyone suggest herbs, nutrients, or other natural approaches for recovering from this illness? I'm 24 weeks pg. Thank you.

For kidney health, I'd be especially making sure to drink enough water every day (and peeing frequently.) Dandelion is great for kidney and liver health - dandelion root for the liver and greens for the kidneys. Greens are also great nutrition during pregnancy too
Dandelion is also very mild and safe. Milk thistle is also good for the liver, and alfalfa and rosehips for the kidneys if I recall. And I think those are all mild too, but not familiar with them during pregnancy in particular. And managing pain is definately important, so don't worry about it. Fear and stress are rough on the kidneys, lol.

: I had a bout with kidney stones about seven weeks ago and the only thing that helped was drinking RIDICULOUS amounts of water to flush out my system. I probably drank between 96-128 oz. of water every day, including through the night.

Good luck, mama, and feel better

I had a huge kidney stone when I was pregnant with DD. I was 2 months and had to have an operation to get it out. No incision, they go in through the urethra and get it out. But it was a horrible experience and I was in a lot of pain and had a demerol injection (which was horrible) and I had a RX for vicodin. My MW also told me that to be in so much pain wasn't good for the baby. I know that what you are going through is awful. My DD was born 7 lbs and totally healthy, now she is an active and healthy two year old. Drink lots of water, eat healthy and try to get rest. My urologist had me stop taking all vitamins because my body could not break down the calcium and I was on a special diet the rest of my pregnancy to avoid calcium. It is really hard to deal with something so scary. Best of luck to you.

I just passed a kidney stone Sunday and I'm 6.5 mos pregnant, all they gave me was tylenol. It sucked! So far I've been on antibiotics to clear up my kidney infection/UTI and drinking a ton of water. I haven't heard of any liver detoxes that are safe during pregnancy. From what I hear, the detoxes release the toxins into the blood stream and they can pass to the baby.

Drink so much water, cut back on calcium supplements and try to get your calcium from natural sources. You can also increase your vitamin C, it helps avoid future stones.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Thank you for the suggestions and sympathy. I totally feel for you three (springmama, laneysprout and jilian) for suffering such pain. Jilian, I hope you feel better soon - I can't imagine passing a stone with only tylenol! They had me on all sorts of narcotics and the pain was still unbearable! Springmama and laneysprout, how long did it take you to recover? I know I have to be patient and optimistic, but I can't help but feel frustrated and a bit depressed. This frigid winter weather isn't helping much. I can't wait for the day when I feel healthy again. One day at a time...
