Here is the birth story of my beautiful little girl!

I was so excited to be pregnant but scared at the same time. We had lost two babies before and when I began bleeding in the first trimester with the third, I just kind of shut down. We had decided to try one more time and if this one didn't work we were going to adopt a baby. Luckily, with bed rest and progesterone suppositories the baby was OK. When we went in for the first ultrasound and we saw her little heart beating I was so relieved becasue the first two babies had no heartbeat - that's how we found out they were not alive.

My pregnancy was fairly "normal" until around 6 months. We even got to fly back to Arizona for Christmas and my birthsday (New Year's Eve). Then the contractions started. I wasn't sure that's what they were and thought I had the flu - then I remembered what my mom said to me about feeling that way too. I was born three months early and she thought she had the flu too but instead she had me! So I called my midwife and she told me to come to the hospital "just to check things out". When we got there my contractions were 5 minutes apart and not stopping. They gave me steroids to develop her lungs and we just all crossed our fingers.

I ended up in the hopsiatal A LOT of the time after than because the drugs to stop labor were not working. I also was on cmplete bed rest - I couldn't even sit up because cointractions would start. It was like this for THREE MONTHS!!! Then I was taken off the drugs and the baby wouldn't come out! Apparently she had gotten comfy...

FINALLY my water broke at 8:30am on March 8th (International Women's Day - you are never more of a woman when you are having a baby!) We met my doula and midwife at the hospitral and I began walking around to speed things up. I have no idea how many miles I walked that day but my slippers were sure broken in by the end of my labor!!! Things were not progressing quickly so I was put on a breastpump to see if the contractions would speed up and intensify. It didn't work. I got in the tub. That didn't work either. After 25 hours my midwife suggested pitocin. I was scared to death because that is the one thing I did not want...

After the pitocin I progressed a little but still was "stuck" at 6 cm. I just wasn't progressing. My midwife checked the baby's position and she was transverse (sideways) so I was put on my hands and knees to straighten her out. That was the most intense pain I have ever been in in my entire life! I remember screaming and then taking control of my breathing but I just wanted to die. It didn't strighten her out but I had to push anyway. My contractions were coming one after another and I wasn't having a break at all. My husband and doula told me later that the monitor was just one hill after another with no break in-between. I remember the doctor in scrubs in the room and thinking to my self "Hm. Why is he here?" Apparently I had five more minutes to push her out or I was having a C-section. (My husband told me that later). I could tell you all more about the pain and the monitors beeping and the people running around but I just don't want to remember that part...Lets move on to the good stuff...

I helped Jennifer (my midwife) pull my daughter out into the beautiful workld @ 2:18pm on March 9th, 2005. Jennifer had me put my hands under Kiera's armpits and helped me pull her out and put her on my stomach. I nursed her and just looked miraculously at this beautiful child who had been inside of me for 9 months. I guess I never asked for pain medicatio9n although I had 16ml of pitocin - which I have been told is a lot! My midwife told me I am amazing!!! Kiera weighed 9lb 4oz and was 21" long - maybe I am amazing to push that out into the world!!! We love each other more wach day and I thank my lucky stars to have her. I know you all feel the same way about your children!

Hi, mother of Kiera --
My husband teaches at NIU in Dekalb and we may move there to improve our quality of life (currently he commutes 4 hrs a day). If I'm pregnant, I want to deliver with a midwife. Suggestions? Gotta run, lil Eli needs me. thanks!
