kind of OT...how bad is regular dishwasher soap?

I figured this would be a good place to post this...I've been using "natural" dishwasher detergents because I didn't like the chlorine smell of regular ones--I figured if I can smell it it is definitely being released into the air. But the natural ones just do not work--I have to scrub everything off the dishes prior to placing them in the dishwasher, and if I miss anything, it is still on the dish when I take it out of the dishwasher. Plus several of the natural detergents have left a whitish powder on my dishes--a couple days ago I opened a new box of the detergent I'd been using and both times I've used the new box it left a film.

So...basically I'm fed up with natural detergents. It's not worth the hassle...but at the same time I don't want to go back to the regular ones! Anyone know of a natural soap that actually works? I've tried Bi-o-kleen, 7th Generation, and another brand I can't remember what. Or is there a way to make your own detergent?

Here's a recipe that I am meaning to try once all my dishwasher liquid is gone: Ingredients:

1/2 cup liquid Castile soap
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
3 drops tea tree extract
1/4 cup white vinegar
Directions:

Combine water and liquid Castile soap. Stir and then add lemon juice, tea tree extract, and vinegar. Stir until blended evenly and store in a squeeze bottle.

Use 2 tablespoons per wash in a standard-size dishwasher.

Note: Do not substitute conventional liquid soap for the Castile soap unless it is a "low sudsing" soap. Regular soaps will produce too many suds and overflow the dishwasher.

This recipe for Automatic Dishwashing Soap serves/makes 1.25 cups.

I hope this helps and if you do try it before me, let me know how it goes!

I use Ecover dishwasher tablets and never have any problems.
Still, no one is saying why or how bad is the conventional stuff. I also wonder.
It so works, is it evil?
It's mainly because of the phosphates. If you google 'Phosphates and detergent" I'm sure you'll find many links.
Could it be your dishwasher?
I use 7th generation and love it. I don't have any problems.

I use the Trader Joe's brand with no problems. I've found that I only need to fill the caps half-way, or I do get white grains on my dishes. Sometimes I put a few glugs of white vinegar in the rinse too.

Well...my dishwasher worked fine with Cascade so I'm thinking it's the natural detergents. Unfortunately we don't have a Trader Joe's anywhere near here so I can't try that brand. Maybe I'll get some Castile soap and try the homemade version.
I haven't tried this yet but I found a much simpler version.

1/2 baking soda (or washing soda)
1/2 Borax

put white vinegar in the jet dry hole.
