I'm sending my first child to K this year
.

My son is still very much into PB&J and, as far as I know, there are no allergy restrictions (this could change; I'll find out in August).

I'm trying to gather a list of good snacks. Ds likes fruit and sometimes veggie snacks, but is not into "strange" foods like tofu or hummus.

I'd like to send yogurt. I've always given him plain yogurt with honey, but even if I can send him in with honey packets and yogurt, I'm not sure that is a practical snack for a Kindergartner who has to feed himself on a time limit; so I'm wondering if there is a packaged yogurt that is not flavored with junk
:.

I don't have a Whole Foods, but I do have a health food place called "Sun Harvest Farms" that I could make a monthly trek to (it's 30 min away in bad traffic).

I give DS stoneyfield organic yogurt, squeezable tube or container(pack a spoon with him). It is a healthy product. Horizon makes one too. Sometimes I freeze the tube as well. I do pack an icepack in his laptop lunch container to keep it as fresh as possible. I think yogurt is great for school, healthy, has protein, is easy, and tastes great! I think the store you talked about would carry it. Maybe you could make your own yogurt?

Partly subbing because after 3 years I'm running out of new ideas...

The best thing I do for snacks is to involve the kids in choosing them. We go to the local produce/healthy-type store and visit the bulk bins where I have them pick out an option or two to try. They also like some of the snack/protein bars, but we do have a nut restriction for DDs K class, so that makes it harder.

Other things that are in our rotation aside from basic whole fruit are: muffins, crackers and cheese, yogurt tubes, pretzels, fruit leather, freeze dried fruit, veggies and dip, chips with salsa and quacamole for dipping, apple slices and peanut butter (sun butter for DD), trail mix, cracker mix.

If he is able to pour, scoop and stir...I may have an idea you could try.

I have sent stoneyfield's plain yogurt cups, with little plastic restaurant condiment-type cups, (that come with a snap tight lid-yet is easy for little fingers to open).ETA..Yes I collect these mainly from Mexican restaurant's salsas to go!! I fill these little cups with honey, maple syrup, berries,etc..add in an appetizer-size spoon-and my 1st gr ds has loved it.

Honestly, experience with my ds in a younger grade(1st), me volunteering at lunch....it all seems to come down to fun/different presentation.

For example, someone posted here(I think!)that they bought a 6 muffin-size, foil tin...and made it into a mini buffet. This was a huge hit for our two youngest! Cheese cubes, crackers, black olives, grapes, cherry toms, ANY small cut vege, berries, cookie cutterlunchmeat-or leftover meat from night before dinner. I usually stick one choc. foil kiss in with the fruit. Ideas are endless-my kids have said it's like having their own custom "Lunchable!" I cover it tight with a foil layer-and stick a freezer on top. It all squishes into
an average size lunch "box."

My DD was in kindergarten last year in school and her school offered a hot lunch, PB&J with fruit and a salad and baked potato. Have you called the school to ask what they usually offer each day? Maybe they will have a salad or potato option? The PB&J option always came with a different fruit each day of the week which made that fun for my DD.

I also packed my DD lunches from home as well, usually PB&J. I also bought one of those insulated bowls with a lid and would put hot foods in there in the morning for her to eat at lunch. It would be lukewarm by the time she ate lunch and she took mac n cheese and homemade ravioli a lot.

Tell me more about the insulated bowl please. I've been using a food jar for DS but that means someone has to help him transfer the warm stuff to a bowl (he's in preschool this year so it's fine). What brand is it? Or where did you find it?

Thanks!

There are resealable Tupperware-type containers that are almost the exact same size as a yogurt cup. I just buy the big tub and send in the little Tupperware with yogurt or cottage cheese in it.

Can you just premix the yogurt and honey or just spoon some honey on top of the yogurt? You can get little plastic containers perfect for small lunch items at any mainstream grocery store. I like the takealongs by Rubbermaid as they seem easiest for little hands to open. I'm not a huge plastic fan, but for something like yogurt there's not too many good options. We do have a Thermos food container, but usually use it for warm things. It would hold a whole lotta yogurt. I think it holds 12-16 oz.

We have these Thermos lunch containers - one for cold/hot meal item and a waterbottle.

They work great and fit perfectly into the lunch bags as well.

My kids usually take PB&J with fruit and water to drink. Sometimes I pack a frozen organic yogurt tube, mac&cheese, tuna fish, pasta.

The stoneyfield at my store has the worst sugar content, but the storebrand has plain.

I might be able to get those cups at Sam's or order them online
