Glad that you're learning to knit -- it's so much fun!

When you work a row in garter stitch, you end up creating a row of little bumps on the side of your work that is _not_ facing you -- this equals one ridge. When you work the next row, you'll create another row of little bumps.

7 rows of ridges = 14 rows of garter stitch.
