I posted about this once before but I thought it was an isolated incedent - apparently not though
I have this problem of any type of yarn I try to knit with (except 2ply wool), it stretches out between my needles so that by the time I am through half a row, there is like 10" of yarn b/t the needles and it gets all tangled up. When I knit a stitch and tighten it, I wind up with all this yarn in between? Does anyone know what I mean? I have all this great yarn I want to knit with but keep getting frustrated b/c of this problem. It happens with circ and straight needles and different sizes.

Any ideas? I've tried to knit and just not tighten my stitches (thought I was pulling to hard on the yarn) but then the stitch is too loose and I have to tighten it some, kwim?

a gal in my knitting class was having the same problem... turns out she was pulling her needles too far apart on the first part of the knit stitch.

when you insert your right needle into the yarn on the left needle, only pull the needles apart a very small amount before placing the skein end between the two and completing the stitch.

How are you casting on? One of my friends was casting on just with loops (ie wrapping the yarn around her thumb and then putting it on the needle. She was ending up with inches of yarn left by the time she reached the end. When she switched to a knit cast on, this problem disappeared.

Okay, I *think* I figured out why this happens. I was knitting my icord for the last soaker I made and then I switched over to knitting with this acrylic and I realized that after I make my stitch, I am pulling the needles apart to tighten the stitch instead of pulling on the working yarn. I wasn't doing that with the other yarn. So since I was pulling my needles apart, I kept winding up with all this yarn in between.

At least I hope that's it! Thanks for the replies!
