This weekend I took dd to the county fair. I checked out the fiber arts booth while we were there and I met this lovely woman. She showed me some of her work and it was amazingly soft! It kind of cracked me up b/c dh and I were just discussing what to do with the unbelievable amounts of hair from our golden retreiver. We joked about making sweaters. Well, one of the display pieces was a scarf knit from golden fur yarn and it was gorgeous. I just had to share.

I used to be friendly with a woman who was a weaver. She had her own Angora bunnies and used to spin yarn straight from the bunny, which was interesting to watch (her bunnies loved it).

This woman made gorgeous things from all sorts of animal fibers. But she did say that the one type of hair that she would no longer use was dog. She said that while the hair could be nice, no matter how you washed or treated the item, it always smelled like dog.

I saw this once... there used to be a show on Animal Planet about dog owners and their dogs in New York City. Can't remember the name of the show right now.

But there was one where this guy and his dog went into a shop to have a sweater for the owner knitted out of his dog's hair.

Didn't really float my boat. But then, I don't have a dog.

It's not only smelly, it's hot as all get out - you *don't* want a dog-hair sweater!! But, a scarf is a bit more manageable
I've spun a bit with cat hair, it's really nice. Also very hot according to reputation, but that extremely beloved kitty died before I could harvest enough fleece to find out

WE used to have a husky and a lab/dalmation mix. We always joked that we were going to have to make a sweater out of the husky's fur for Speak, since he got so cold all the time. My MIL has been saving the husky's hair for a while now!

Oh my gosh! I have a friend who is moving to Texas and leaving her beloved guinea pigs behind..........I will definitly show her the link to the lady you met. It ought to at least make her smile!

Seriously, though, there are crafty people out there and then there are the truely crafty...... weaving dog hair would definitely fall into the the latter category, I think. Thanks for sharing!
