There is a home recipe for washing out the flame retardant chemicals. It's written in some natural baby book. Someone in Mothering posted it awhile back. So I'll keep my OTSBH, but I'll wash it out (vinegar, baking soda) very well.
does anyone know where to find instructions on this?

The first three steps can be any kind of natural laundry soap, but the fourth step is supposed to be BioKleen (which is also the best brand for diapers, I've heard).
