Hi, I need help choosing a mei tai.

I borrowed two from my friend to try out. She had made both, but the one I really like is a copy of a Kozy Carrier. My problem is that I do not care for the selection of fabrics available for Kozy Carriers.

Does anyone know of a mei tai very similar to a Kozy Carrier in structure and looks? I do not need a pocket on mine.

Thanks for your help, mamas!

Wow I'm suprised, you don't like any of her fabrics? You don't have to have a pocket on it either. And you can have it reversible for a plain color. I love Kozy, really great quality too.

not really sure which MTs are most similar to Kozy....but, you might want to try looking at the 'For Sale or Trade' forum at www.thebabywearer.com: once in a while custom Kozys come up for sale--you might find a fabric you like. Not sure if Kozy is taking custom orders, but it wouldn't hurt to email and ask (although you'll pay more). Those are my only thoughts....I'm not fond of most Kozy prints either, although I like some of the newer stripes...

lisamarie, not sure why you're surprised I don't like the selection...everyone has different taste and there are only about 15 designs to choose from...compared to more than 50 from meitaibaby. And I don't doubt the quality. I'm just not going to pay $80 for a design I dislike.

I know I don't need a pocket...I said that only so that someone would feel free to suggest a similar one even if it did not have the pocket option. And the reversible is great for my dh, but I am not interested in wearing a solid color mt.

beachbaby, thanks for the link...I'm in a hurry, though, so I was hoping I could just order one from somewhere.

So, if you had to say which carrier most closely resembles the KC mt, which would it be?

I don't like her selection either which is why I bought my own fabric ($13) and paid the custom fee ($10) but I'm sure some people might find spending almost $100 for a carrier hard to swallow. I wish she offered a selection like babyhawk does (although I don't like the babyhawk design)

yeah, a custom is probably your best bet, if you're not crazy about the fabric. or looking for used ones - she has had a lot of different kinds of fabric available in the past, and those older ones come up for sale now and again, as do customs.

i know the maya tie has the same basic body dimensions as a Kozy, but it has wrap style shoulder straps instead of padded ones.... don't know about others. i mostly make my own so i'm not much help in that department.

fwiw, i don't much like the fabric selection atm either - though i have to admit that several of them are more attractive in person than they look on the website. Kelley who owns Kozy (and her kids, of course) are in playgroup i'm in and a few months ago we all brought our carriers for people to try out. and there were a couple that i thought were gross online that were actually pretty attractive IRL.

it might be helpful to go to thebabywearer.com and check out action pictures in their gallery to see what it actually looks like on someone. you might be surprised.

Yeah, I posted there, and then realized I probably should've posted here, but didn't know how to move it....guess I should've asked a mod?

I don't really want to fork out $100 for this....maybe I'll ask my friend to make me one...it's just that can be a little sticky...if it doesn't turn out how I want...what's a fair price...how fast can I ask her to make it, etc. Any advice those of you that have done this before (i.e., made one for a friend, or bought one from a friend)?

You might want to try looking into "Doodlebug" MTs, which are very similar to the Kozy. My friend has one, and we compaired it to my Kozy, and I think the only difference was about a 1" difference in either height or width, I forgot which one. http://www.doodlebugboutique.com/store/

And Doodlebug $ goes to paying for the WAHM's dd's autism therapy. Definitely feels good to be sending our $ her way (not that Kozy Carrier or other WAHMs are not deserving!)

The Ebay suggestion was a good one....speaking as someone who probably spends too much time there!?! : There are a lot of great WAHM made MT's on the site and I've found that a lot of these are modeled after some of the more popular "name brands" and the quality on the ones that I've purchased has been supurb!! Most will offer a return policy too if it ends up not working out for you. Plus you'll occasionally see a Kozy or two pop up as well. You might want to check it out. HTH?

Yes, the doodlebug straps are padded. My friend and I were really amazed at how similar the Kozy and the DB were. The only major difference really was the different panel fabrics used, plus the price!

Doodlebug and Sachi are both similar to the Kozy. I got both of them before my kozy. Now I like the kozy a LOT better. Both have straps that are a bit shorter and bodies that are smaller.

Sachi uses twill straps and Kozy uses cotton canvas. The Sachi straps are softer than Kozys.

Sachis are smaller bodied (narrower) than Kozys.

I've had *many* different kinds, and nothing fits quite like a Kozy. But a Doodlebug is quite close. I personally didn't think a sachi fit quite the same, but it is a nice carrier also.
