I'm looking for some info on areas around LAX. DH just accepted a job there and we're considering a move up to LA so he doesn't have to commute from Orange County. We'll probably hold off on moving until Nov/Dec when he graduates from the police academy. I went back in the LA mama's threads and found that you recommended the Palms and Mar Vista neighborhoods. I was happy to see that these are both very close to LAX, which is great because we'd like to be within 10 miles if at all possible.

Is there anything that you can tell me about these neighborhoods? Can you walk to shopping areas? Safe areas? Is there a local homeschooling group in the area? How about Culver City? Is there a better time of year to rent, like now vs. waiting until the fall? We'd like to hold off since the academy is in Whittier and we're looking at possibly giving notice here and staying w/ my parents for a few months to put us closer to the police academy.

Sorry for bombarding you with all of these questions, but I need to gather info!

Thanks in advance

There isn't really a better time to rent, though a lot of students from UCLA move out around now and back in around September, so you can sometimes find things a little easier over the summer that in the fall.

Out of the areas up here, Culver City is probably the safest, but also the most expensive. Every mile or so is different in terms of what you can walk to, it's best to scope out the little neighborhoods for which one feels the best to you. There are 2 HS groups, LA Homeschoolers and a Culver/Westchester group. Some of the mommas on the LA mommas thread can help you hook up with them.

each of those cities have nice and crappy areas as well. If you give me cross streets, i'll tell you what's what. You really need to just drive around and see for yourselves. Westchester is nicer than all of those areas but there are not many apartments. What's your budget?
I've moved 10 times in 8 years and have found all of my places (nice ones) on www.westsiderentals.com It does cost a fee but IT IS NOT A SCAM. They list all of the rentals for free so people sign up with them as opposed to paying and putting it in the paper.
My diaper lady/ friend just moved from culver city- Centinela blvd. and Inglewood ave. The city put up signs on her street that said the area was contaminated with cancer causing chemicals. : So I suggest driving down and checking specifics out.
There is nice area in West LA off of Sepulveda blvd and National blvd with a large homschool group. I may have some numbers... It is called WESTSIDE VILLAGE and there are a lot of apartments with UCLA students. It is next to UCLA MARRIED STUDENT housing. Alot of people do not have cars over there because there is a bus - the BIG blue bus line of Santa monica, it cost like 85 cents and takes you around that area. Look near the Westside Pavillion mall. LA is odd because One block can be rich and house celebrities but 4 blocks over is a slum. It has good and not so good pockets. It is advisable to ask a local, so you don't end up in gang warfare Elyice
my friend's cars got 1) stripped and 2) stolen while she lived in palms. she lived off national? i think, near the 10 freeway. she said it was next to a crack house, or maybe it was a former crack house! so that's all i know about palms, so i can't say that all areas of palms are like that. good luck!

We're headed up today with a huge list of places to check out in Redondo, El Segundo, West LA, Palms, Mar Vista, Venice, Westchester and Santa Monica.

As far as property crimes go, that's what the LAPD told me about the Palms area, since it is so densely populated. The funny thing is that we are in a very quiet, nice suburban neighborhood here in Huntington Beach and something has happened to every vehicle that we've owned while living here! When we first moved back from Arizona in '96 we were staying here with my parents and the passenger side door!?!?!?! was stolen off of our Honda Accord. In '02 our truck was broken into and the stereo was stolen and two days later they stole my junky 1992 Ford Escort wagon.

Anyhow...thanks for the suggestions and we'll see how dh likes the areas up there. He really has no idea how crowded it is and I think he'll be in for a shock!

Wish me luck!

Wow, I'm so glad I found this topic. My dh is interviewing for a job in El Segundo and I really have no idea where to look. I'm from LA, lived there for 18 yrs, but have lived on the east coast for 10 years now. I have a lot of family in CA but they live further north - Calabassas, Thousand Oaks - and I don't think dh would be up for that commute.

We will look at the Westside village area. Unfortunately most of my looking will be on the net.

I really want something with more of a city feel. I hate having to drive everywhere. Right now I can walk to anything I need.
