This topic has come up here and there in other threads so I thought folks might want to read what the Times had to say about its coverage of Arnold.

from today's Sunday edition:

"When the story was published, Schwarzenegger admitted that he had "behaved badly" in the past and offered a general apology to any women he had offended. At another point, he said, "I have never grabbed anyone and pulled up their shirt and grabbed their breasts and stuff like that." But when asked whether he was denying all the stories about grabbing, he said, "No, not all." At still another point,he questioned the credibility of some of the women. But the facts in the Times stories have not been seriously challenged."

Check out the entire article:

http://www.latimes.com/news/politics...,4817752.story

I really do like it when journalists lay it all on the table like this and I am sure a good deal of people do as well.

I do think it's helpful to educate readers about the whole process -- I mean, there IS a process and standards, etc.

I remember years ago when the Washington Post didn't publish the sexual harassment stuff they had on Bob Packwood (remember him,the Senator from the Northwest, Washington maybe? until a month or so AFTER the election...boy, were voters angry.

I heard the senior LA time editor on the Meet the Press explain the process. He said when Arnold announced his run some of his staff finally decided to find out if there really was anything to all of t hese rumors about him and his womanizing ways.... these rumors have been floating out there for years, and years...certainly all the time I've been in Hollywood and that's 20 years.
Anyway, the way they did it is they found the cast and crew lists for all of his movies and that took some time and then they tracked down key women on the crew. It took time because people have moved and getting their phone numbers etc. and once they started calling they started to get the story.
And they would get referals from women to other women who worked with him.
It was described as 'gumshoe' reporting.
