I do not like the word "preteen" and I especially dislike "tween" (shudder).

I think they are words used to push children into adolescence before their time.

Am I alone? What do you think?

No you are NOT alone. I dislike the fact that my 8yo is considered a pre-teen. When I think of pre-teens I think of 11 or 12 year olds.

I get especially confused in the younger kids forum. It would seem that babies are only up to one year, toddlers are one to two. The childhood years seem to be three -six or seven. And once they hit eight they are in the preteen-teen forum.

I think maybe they should add a preschooler forum for three to five years and the childhood years should be just that.. the childhood year.. which are five through teen. Then the 11-19 yos can have the preteen - teen forum.

And while I still dislike the word preteen I think 11 better fits with that. If an eight year old is a preteen then so is a six year old.. or three year old for that matter.

Oh yea..and I think tween means they are in between children and teens. However, again I don't think anything younger than 11 should be in that category.

I think "preteen" is perfectly appropriate to describe an 11 or 12yo who's started puberty and is already dealing with adolescent issues ( hormonal changes, etc). It's defining what's already going on, not encouraging "mature" behavior by little kids.

I've never personally used the term "preteen" to describe a child under 10- though some 10yos I would still describe as a "child"- depending on where he or she was regarding puberty.

They dont really bug me, but I agree that it can be reaching to include an 8 or 9 year old in those categories. A ten year old? Maybe. I guess it just depends on the individual child. To me, in general, an 11 and 12 year old is a pre-teen or tween.

I agree that the Childhood Years seems skewed to preschoolers. But that's probably because of all the preschool age issues (potty training, tantrums, starting preschool or not, etc. etc.) I've found my 7 and 9 yo to be pretty laid back now and relatively easy to live with and I never have much I would need to post about them. Maybe that's a reason why not many people post in Childhood Years about the 8 - 10 yo set--there just isn't much to post about. I think someone with a question about an 8 yo should post in the Childhood Years though, not here. I would guess this forum was originally meant for like 11-12 through teens.

To answer the OP, I never found the term preteen bugging me. But yes, it always meant more like an 11 or 12 yo, not an 8 yo.

I too am confused where I should post.
I would think childhood years would be the place for posting about my 9 year old but it does seem most of the posters are about younger children.
Preteen just does not seem right!

"Tween" is a marketing tool, pure and simple. Just like "teenager" was coined in the 50's to sell music, clothing, etc. From a social constructionist standpoint, we're creating a lot of strange new subcultures and problems associated with them.

*grumble* It really has next to nothing to do with real development and more to do with creating niches. Besides, hyper standardized and increasingly compartmentalized norms just create friction....
