My newest ds is 2 weeks old today. I've been trying to make eye contact with him and getting him to "lock into" my face, but his eyes dart around so quickly. He won't maintain eye contact for even a whole second. Should I be worried? I seem to recall that ds1 and I were gazing into each other's eyes for long periods of time by 2 weeks old.

Every child is different, so I wouldn't worry. Most babies look at the contours of the face at 2 weeks old instead of direct eye contact.

I thought I read that looking into your eyes can be a bit intense for some early on, and they have a hard time taking in your whole face at once, so they look at just individual parts. That may be what the darting around is. Plus, of course, I think they're still working out how to make both eyes focus on the same thing at the same time. Maybe wait a month or so? It's a lot for a little baby to take in all at once, going from inside to outside.

My DS is a month old and still not focusing on my face yet. Give him some time... hopefully he will soon, I love gazing into thier eyes!

I've read (and experienced for myself) that between 1 and 2 months babies "wake up" and start making eye contact, babbling, etc.

I don't think my DD was making eye contact with me at 2 weeks.

It might be a bit early for that. Some babies focus on faces right away but others like my DD need a bit more time.

*whew* glad to hear the responses. they say with your second child you are more relaxed, but i feel just as uptight!

We thought there was really something wrong with DS's vision for the same reason, but the pediatric ophthalmologist said things really "turn on" at 12 weeks. And so they did, on that very day, he started tracking things and looking at our faces. Sounds like a variation on norm to me
