This has been an odd week for me. Perhaps, I am a lactivist by default?
Thursday, babe and I go to the zoo with a few other mothers. While at the zoo, I nurse my son. (Finding a place to nurse was crazy!!!) I picked out a nice stretch of grass behind some picnic benches and beneath a tree. Completely away from the crowds (thousands of school age children). While, nursing, I look up and there are three children (about 6 years of age) with one of the children taking a picture of me. When she saw me, she ran away. Seriously. I still can't believe something like this happened. I am a very shy NIP mama.
Today, I attended a baby shower with baby (he was invited). I read all of the good come backs regarding nursing on this site in preparation for the stinkeye or nasty comments. So, my friend's mom tells me, "don't feed him... I made some homemade baby food." I decline politely and compliment her on the homemade baby food. I even included a comment like, "what a lucky baby he is to have homemade food." She pushes the issue and says, "no, feed him some of my baby food, he doesn't want breast milk." This time I respond, "only the breast for him." However, I said it in my snotty voice.
There was a bright spot to this day. The other women at the shower complimented me on my figure (no more baby weight). I responded, "It's all breastfeeding. Burns 500 calories a day. I eat like a horse and will probably breastfeed until he goes to college."
My formula friend (who stopped breastfeeding at 2 months, GAINED weight.) Yes, now, I am really catty. But, seriously, I feel amazing and my 5 3/4 month boy was happy.
Husband says that baby's good health and countenance is due to mommy's milk. That makes me feel like a good momma.
