DH and I live in a glorious apartment in Boston that we love love love. It's old, and while I don't know when the building was built, it must have been well before 1978. I think we're going to have to get an inspector in. We don't own, we rent, so anyone know what the landlord would be responsible for versus what we'd be responsible for, and what the whole process might entail? We love the place and don't want to move, but of course if it's going to be dangerous, we're out of there.

Here's the guidelines for landlord responsibily in Mass. I believe it is saying the landlord is responsible. http://www.gis.net/~groucho/landlord.html#10

Super helpful! Thanks so much. Now, I guess I just have to talk to the landlord, we'll see how that goes.
