OK, so I admitted to a friend that I have no idea how to pin a dipe. Later that day I was ashamed! How could I not know how to pin a dipe?? So I took out my cheapo gerber pins and started trying to teach myself. I ran the pins thru my hair and that helped them go thru (they wouldn't go thru at all b4!). But the pins don't hold my dipe as tight/snug as the snappi. Is that how it is pinning dipes? Or do I just need more practice?

Probably both! I was a pinning novice recently and while I *am* improving a lot, I still fail to see how people who claim to love the snug and custom fit they get from pins are actually doing it. I think the Snappi provides a much snugger fit

And btw, in a pinch you can use baby lotion to lube your pins... I also used the side of DH's nose after he'd been out sweating and mowing the yard one day... *that* worked great! Sweaty husbands have more than one use

I have also failed to see how pinning is better or snugger, regardless of the brand of pin or what it was lubed with. I was forced to use them on a camping trip (because I forgot my Snappi, and of course, WalMart doesn't sell Snappis), and it SUCKED. I brought CPFs and 4 wool covers, and all 4 covers got pooped on. I will never go back to pinning -- no wonder no one wants to CD. If I had to pin, I wouldn't either.

When you pin, you do one side, then snug the other side a bit tighter than you think would be comfortable, and pin. It will relax just enough to be comfortable, but still be nice & snug.
Oh, and be sure to keep 2 fingers between the baby & the diaper when pinning, so you don't stick anybody but you

Pinning really is something you have to get used to! I learned when I was 10, so it comes naturally to me - I always catch myself thinking "how hard can pinning a diaper be, guys?!?!" - well, DUH - pretty dang hard if you've never done it before!

polihaupt is right on both counts. Also I keep several pins stuck in a bar of Ivory soap on our diaper changing station. Before soap it was impossible to get those pins in, after soap it was a breeze. Now I
love pinning and rarely use my snappis.

I've just started pinning, when Ian was wee I just used wraps. In the past couple months we've gone back to using the occasional prefold (more and more these days as I've given away much of my stash to a pg friend) and my technique improves each time. Seriously.

DH watched me pin a diaper tonight and commented on how good I was becoming. :LOL How bad must I have been before for him to take notice?!

(P.S. I've never tried a snappi, they looked too complicated, imo!)
