I learned FAM from Taking Charge of Your Fertility, and sucessfully avoided pregnancy for a couple of years then got pregnant very quickly when we wanted to.

I'm pretty sure NFP is the same as FAM, except with NFP you abstain during your fertile window, while with FAM you can either abstain or use condoms. If there are other differences, then I don't know about them.
