Leg cramps?

494 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  sarahloughmiller
Anyone getting these? I woke up to a horrible cramp in the calf of my left leg yesterday and it still feels tight today. I have a friend that's due in August that mentioned getting lots of leg cramps. This is the first for me. I'm going to be eating up some bananas and trying to drink more water, but I'm not really sure what else I can do to avoid getting more of them.

I *think* I had one this morning LOL. We've been replacing our water main for the last 4 days, so I've gotten plenty of excersize going up and down the hill and stairs, but we ran out of banana's and money on Friday. So...ouch. I was either having a very vivid dream, or had a nasty leg cramp at about 6 am. I was catching up on sleep so probably just rolled around grabbing at it for a bit LMAO.

I'd been eatting a banana every day or every other day at least, and it was the last thing I'd eat before bed too. Otherwise my calves would tingle, and it was very annoying.
I have been having some problems with this as well. I seem to have more of a problem with them in the 3rd trimester than at any other time. I found that bananas help, but they have other side effects. *whistle*
Holy crap...talk about leg cramps! I had the worst one imaginable two days ago and my leg is still sore today!

Our Bradley instructor said a banana and glass of milk before bed gives you that extra dose of potassium and calcium. One of the girls in my class said that pressing behind your knee when it's happening stops it pretty quickly.

It's also a good time to practice that deep breathing and relaxation that is going to come in handy during labor...

I used to get these a lot until I learned THE SECRET. This will save your life. It works. I swear.

As soon as you feel a cramp starting, immediately flex your foot (heel down, toes up toward shin). It stops the charley horse instantly. I trained myself to recognize a charley horse beginning in my sleep and do this automatically. I'd say a cramp starts every other night and I don't have any problems b/c this stops it instantly. I know it seems counterintuitive to flex the muscle when it hurts but it really works.

I did the same thing this morning when I felt another one coming on and it worked. Good tip.

Now that's odd, I had a glass of milk last night before bed, and I had one last night LOL!! And the streaching my calf was very painful, but I didn't wake up until the cramp was in full force.
I get these constantly.
Of course, I'm taking a medication for my hypertension that makes it even worse.

I agree with stretching the muscle as it is happening. It definitely makes it more tolerable.

Yeah that! Calcium is also good. You need to make sure you are balanced calcium and potasium.

This was my first one, but I definitely didn't wake up until the cramp was happening full force. I'll try to catch it early next time if I can. I do have to work on the calcium. I'm pretty good at eating a banana every day, but I've only recently started drinking milk again (I've just been using rice milk for cereal since ds was little).
Mine are getting really bad again, and now I have them combined with restless legs and some odd thing going on with my left ankle.

I am banana intolerant - which really sucks, as I LOVE them! I can't seem to get enough milk these days, but the cramps are still there. I feel like I spend all night stretching! :LOL

I have not gotten a bad one yet this time. I have been waking up right as it is starting and just stretch my leg out and it stops it. I had them horrible with ds and my leg would be sore for days after. The stretching things really works, I know it is hard durring a leg cramp to stretch it out but you just have to. Being pregnant can be so painful sometimes.
