lesson pricing

Like many of you, I sign my dds up for a variety of classes during the course of the year. More than a couple of times now we have run into interesting make-up class policies.

We have signed up and paid (in advance) for classes that are meant to last - say 10 weeks - but that are only actually scheduled for 9 weeks because the first class fell on a holiday. If we had signed up for a different day of the week, we would have had 10 classes. Or we paid for a month of classes when the facility knew it would cancel all classes the last week of the month because of camps.

We sometimes can schedule a make-up class, but it seems a bit unethical for these places to knowingly charge us for classes they can't provide. Maybe I'm just looking at this from a funny perspective because I'm thinking of a per week cost. Any experience to share?

With our park and rec they prorate when a session falls on a holiday-so the session for July on Weds would be cheaper than the rest because of the 4th of July.
I'm suprised that your classes are not done that way as well. I would definitely bring it up to them. If you're paying for 10 sessions then you should get 10 sessions-period.

The only exception may be for an on going class all year (we do karate 2x per week yr round) that you pay monthly-then I could see paying the same no matter if there was a holiday or not.
No, that sounds like a ripoff to me. So far here when that happens they just add a week on to the end. Soccer for example was 10 weeks but they missed 2 weeks due to easter weekend and some tournament using the field so they made it 12 weeks.
ya...around here, they either prorate or add a class to the beginning or end to make all the sessions the same....depending on what organization runs the program.

That has been our experience also.

This is normal for everything from music lessons to swimming. It's just a monthly bill regardless of how many times you will be going.

Thanks for the stories and input. I'm currently confused about dd1's horse riding lessons. She takes private lessons once a week. They require a month's pay in advance so $zz times number of Wednesdays in the month. This month they knew there would be no lessons at all next week, but we still had to pay for the full month. We are invited to schedule a make-up, but when I tried to schedule an extra hour this week (in anticipation of missing next week) we couldn't.

I guess I'm just worried that with our summer schedule and their summer camp schedule we'll be crazy with the make-ups and keeping up with what's been paid and what hasn't. They aren't the most business-like of operations! Not to mention the lessons are not cheap!

(On the plus side, their philosophy and instructor are excellent and very well suited to my dd's learning style.)
