Well, first and foremost, I am expecting a New Bum to diaper sometime in June! Because i have the babyfever, thought i would share the news with you all and ask some questions about newborn diapering.

To give you some perspective, this baby will be born at home and breastfed.

We used a diaper service + wool covers for the 1st 2 months with our son (who is 14 months now) And wont be using one again. We use fitteds 100% of the time now with tristan and will likely do the same for this little one.

But i have no experience gathering a newborn stash, we will be using only wool. we dont use polyfleece, but i think i might want to try some wool or silk liners.

What did you use in the first 2 months? (diapers, covers, doublers, liners and how many?)

For those of you who have more than one, did you find you had forgotten any important facets of newborn diapering? LOL i feel like i am forgetting something about the reality of it and I would rather not be caught unprepared.

Obviously i will be sewing a lot of my stash (and all of the clothes) but i am soo excited to look at some WAHM's itty bitty diapers! So give me your links!

Thanks in Advance, we are sooo overjoyed!

Congratulations!

Becca is 6 weeks old today so I will tell you what has worked for us. Kissaluvs size 0s fit great and I love how they keep the dipe away from the cord site. We used Proraps over them. That being said, she outgrew them very quickly. Not necessarily size wise but they just are not the most absorbant. Would I buy them again? Definately. I sold them for $7.50 each so they only cost about $1.50 each, the cost of an infant CPF. I also bought a dozen preemie CPFs but theses basically proved useless for our pudge. She was 8lbs 8ozs at 4 days. The did work as doublers for the KL though so not a complete waste. I bought all this and more from Natural Babies . Great place for all the basics and some WAHM stuff too. I really loved the fit of 8 ply CPFs by the time she was 2 weeks old. We also use Sugarpeas size 1, Fireflys, and a whole bunch of others. These just happen to be the bulk of our stash.

Congratulations!

I made a bunch of newborn fitteds out of flannel - I'm glad I did! You'll want a LOT, and be prepared to change every hour or so. I would say that 4 dozen would not be extreme, if you're making your own. My NB fitteds have a 13" rise, and I *think* a 12" "wingspan" (but keep in mind that I put elastic in the back). They were simple inner-outer-sewn in soaker flannel dipes, and I sewed them right sides together, inserting the elastic as I serged around the outside, then turned them & serged across the front edge to close. They were very fast & easy. Putting snaps on with a snap press will be a breeze - I wish I had one when I made mine! I used pins instead.
If you want them to be snappi-able, try gathering up secondhand towels to use for the outer layer, rather than flannel.

I have no advice on newborn wool - the only wool I used at that stage was a pull-on handknit soaker. Very nice

Congratulations Tabitha!! As for diapering a newborn--lots of dipes, lol. BUt if Tristan is still in dipes, not as many as you would think. No need to have more than twice as many total as you can wash at once. Not that I let that stop me

I am so happy for you! We used four dozen fitted diapers and several wool covers. He used them for two weeks and then graduated to smalls - well we had too many diapers then too but I used 36 of them more then others. So 36 would be your maximum I would say and four to 6 wool covers. Don't you make diapers mama? Can you not just make your new baby tons? Or are you like me and love variety!! LOL! Again Congratulations and have a healthy and happy nine months.

Liam was first newborn in cloth, and the one thing I remember was wishing I had covers with umbilical notches, and covers in the next size up on hand because newborns grow fast! Of course, I didn't mind the no umbilical notch too much, I just pinned a diaper on (flats or cpfs) and wrapped in a blanket till it was healed up.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Our wee one that is due next month is the first baby I will have cd'd at birth. I have 5 Kissaluvs 0, 6 preemie CuddleBuns, 36 preemie cpf's that I am using to stuff my flannel pocket fitteds I am making, and then a bunch of stuff for babe to grow into. I am busy knitting wool soakers and Longies too.

Congrats again!

Congratulations! I am thinking about this too, so this thread is really helpful. I didn't cd my last until 6 months or so. So far I am leaning towards some very tiny Samuel's fitteds and some prefolds. Maybe some little kissaluvs or snugglebottoms though as dh prefers the fitteds. Is there anything cuter in the world than those teeny tiny diapers (apart from the babies who wear them of course.)

Congratulations! I have never cd'ed a newborn (but I also will have one in June!!) so I have no suggestions except to say that www.fluffymail.com has some super cute newborn diapers and they are coming out with newborn covers as well. I like that they have a snap down option for the umbilical cord.
