Let's Talk Baby Car Seats and Off Gassing

I THINK I am going to invest in this seat. http://www.elitecarseats.com/Britax-Companion.pro But I don't know. It's one of the best supposedly, but also pretty toxic, so I need to decide and then get it ASAP so it can off gas.

Any thoughts on:

A) The seat you're buying
B) How long to off gas

Personally, I'd rather get a seat that is really fantastically safe and just wash the cover and then let it all air out for a while. I have a Britax Marathon in my car, my mom has a Graco in hers. DD LOVES riding in her Britax--she is just so happy and comfortable. Plus, that thing is rock solid in my car--you would think it was part of the actual car--it doesn't move or shift even a millimeter. My mom's Graco make DD miserable--she complains about how uncomfortable she is and the seat shifts all over the car. Its just not safe. I love the Marathon too because DD can stay in it until 65 pounds, and I personally believe in keeping them in a 5-point harness for as long as possible.

I never had the Companion--Britax developed their infant seat after DD was born. I will reuse her Peg Perego infant seat for this baby entirely for financial reasons, but if I was starting all over I would buy the Companion just based on Britax's reputation for safety alone. Plus, the height and weight limit is higher on the Companion, so the baby can stay in it a lot longer. DD outgrew her Peg when she was 5 months old, which was rough!

See, I was looking to buy one that starts at 5 pounds and lasts to 60 or 80, but heard a lot of them don't fit well with the lil babies.

The Marathon starts at 5 pounds. It would REALLY help if I could put baby in just one seat. BUT I am okay with two because it's also nice to have the infant seat to carry just in case. However, just out of curiosity, do you think an 8-9 pound baby would be okay in the Marathon?
Hello, I'm new to the board, but I do have some opinions on this as I am a Child Passenger Safety Tech and do a lot of research on car seats. As far as the study on toxic carseats, I read another article that I can't find now or I'd post it. But it basically said 1. Your actual car is probably more toxic than the carseat 2. There isn't enough information about how they did the study 3. If your child isn't eating the seat then you should be fine 4. car seats save lifes-period. The infant seat I'm using rated the worse for toxins and although I don't like it, I'm not going to return it. The most important thing with picking a car seat is that you use it properly and have it installed properly. As far as buying a seat early to off gas it, you also have to consider that all car seats expire, so you will be limiting your useful life by buying it too early (or you can buy one that's already a year old-like I did-but I got a reduced price so it was worth it to me). My infant seat will expire in 2013, so I'm sure I will be done having children before then. But for a convertible seat, getting a current DOM is more important, IMO, so you don't need to replace it as soon.

I don't have personal experience with the Companion, but I do like the anti-rebound feature (with is why I bought the Combi Centre-it is the only infant seat with that feature that I know of and it was much cheaper). Britax seats aren't necessarily safer, but they are easier to use for most people thus the great safety reputation. I own Britax seats for both of my children, mainly because I think they are great value for the money because they last longer with higher weight limits/taller top slots, and I have big kids.

If a Marathon will fit a newborn has more to do with the babies height in their torso. The bottom slots on the Marathon can be up to an inch over the babies shoulders, but that means about a 10 inch torso. Since I have two other children to get into the car, I decided on an infant seat for this one. But I would get a less expensive infant seat and put more money to a great convertible seat. As long as an infant seat has a 5 point harness, it should be fine. If it also adjusts in the front all the easier to use!

I like the Britax Marathon and the Sunshine Radian (less than $199 on the internet nowadays). Both are for 5 - 65 (ish--don't have the numbers in front of me) pounds. They grow so fast...

As for off gassing, AKmom is right--your car is toxic, too. The best strategy is to limit your car travel as much as possible. Buying a car seat early and letting it air out for a few months is great advice, too. And certainly wash the cover a few times (drip dry only).
I agree, I was talking about this with another group of mom friends and yes, while off-gassing is icky and bad, a LOT of things do it. I'd like to get another Britax (I think ours now is a decathalon) for the new babe and avoid the bucket seats all together this time around. ITA with the other posted about how comfy and secure it is.
I've heard many times that the Britax Decathalon won't really fit a 5 pounder. But I have a friend that had an almost 9 lb. baby and he fit perfectly into the Britax Decathalon. So, if you have a history of large babies, you should be fine to start with a convertible. My second one was only 7 lb. 2 oz. and did not fit well into a convertible carseat at all. We had to switch back to an infant carseat after we brought her home. So, I'm planning to get or borrow an infant carseat at least for a month or two before purchasing a Britax Decathalon for this one.
You can definitely put a newborn in the Marathon. I have lots of friends who used that Marathon from the very beginning, and their kids are still in it at 4. To me, that's a really good value. I have a second Marathon in DH's car and am considering putting the new babe in it from the beginning too, since DD never spent much time in the infant seat, and when she did she was screaming! I figure I can just go from seat to sling when we go places. I actually found my Peg Perego infant seat very difficult to use.

Thanks!! Although one thing is wrong on the list -- the baby doesn't have to eat something toxic to be harmed. Chemicals harm us as we breathe them in. But otherwise, it all makes sense! I am also aware that I won't be doing long drives for quite a while, and that helps me make peace with my choice.

I am on my last baby, so shelf life of the seat means nothing to me. I would rather off-gas for several months so baby won't breath in toxic fumes from the seat. I am so sensitive to chemicals, as are several people in my family, so it makes sense for us.

Thanks for all the input! Perfect!

Gosh, there is so much info in this thread, thanks!

We are going to be re-using our Graco carrier. DD was 5 lbs 14 oz at birth and so tiny she would have never fit into a convertible. Plus, it was very convenient as I never had to wake her if I had to go out and about.

But ITA that good money should be spent on the convertible seat...and that installation is key! I've had the local firemen install mine every time.
I totally agree that just breathing in the toxins are very bad for us and our babies. I know I can't even walk down the cleaning supply isle of the grocery store without getting a headache since I switched to natural cleaners. I'm glad I'm more aware of the chemicals in car seats, but I know some techs are worried about people using this as a excuse not to use a car seat, which is obviously more dangerous than the chemicals that most babies will be exposed to anyway-somewhere.
Liora's ridden in her Britax Marathon since birth (although she was a huge baby -- 10 lbs 2 oz and 21") and it's been just fine. Well, I take that back -- we got rear-ended about a year ago and the insurance company replaced her seat with a Britax Decathlon, so that's what she's been using since then. My experiences with both have been really great (she and the other baby I had in the car who was also in a Britax didn't even wake up when we got hit even though it was hard enough to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage), and the Decathlon *looks* like it would be good for a newborn with all the little pads and stuff it comes with.
So, what do you all think about buying a used carseat, say, off Ebay? I'd really like to have a Britax Companion for this new baby, but I can't justify buying one new when the babe will outgrow it so quickly. I will buy a new Britax convertible when the baby is ready for one, but I don't think I want to start out with a convertible. They are much more affordable used, and in most cases, only 8 months old or so.
I would never ever buy a used carseat, period. But I'm a wee bit...picky on this issue, so maybe that's just me. You have no way of knowing if the seat has been in a wreck. And if it doesn't have the stickers on it with the date it was made and all that, it makes it a million times harder to check for recalls.

Now if it was from a close friend or family member, and I felt I could trust them about the seat's history...I'd consider it. But ebay? Nope. Not me.

I can't justify laying out 200 bucks for a bucket seat either, personally. My child will just have to suffer in a Graco or something.
(er, no offense or snark intended, btw)

I think car seats are generally good for 6 years. I guess you would need to know exactly when the seat was manufactured, but I doubt they would have a seat more than a year old on the shelves at stores.
We put Ilana in Evan's Boulevard today and her shoulders are just now even w/ the lowest 'slot'. She's 7.5 mos, 14.5# and 26". I have pics of her in the seat at just under 7# if anyone wants to see and today's pic too.
She started to fit about 9.5# at 4 mos. That's when she was finally at the 1" rule (her shoulders were 1" under the bottom slots). The Marathon is worse b/c it lacks the infant insert and the slots are slightly higher on it (and the Decathalon) as compared to the BV. Unless you're having a monster baby, I would get an infant seat. Oh, the Sunshine Kids Radian seats are good for small babies though if you don't want an infant seat and want a seat that will still last the full 6 yrs or at least 4-5.

I will add more later, but just wanted to post this link a friend sent me a few months back
http://healthycar.org/home.php

They have toxicity reports for both cars and carseats. Not all may be listed, but its very interesting. Just scroll down and hit 'no thanks' when they ask for your info.
We are going to get a Marathon for this baby. I helped my sister install hers and was very impressed with it. My friends who have used the Marathon from birth haven't had any problems with it fitting an average 7-8 pound baby and I know lots of kids that have used it up to the full 65 pounds.

Besides, my infant seat that DS and DD used is now over 6 years old so it's not safe to use in the car anymore, and I'm too cheap to buy another one. I'm not too worried about not having a "bucket" type infant seat because with DD we generally just went from the carseat to the sling and back, and never took the seat out anyway. I found it was easier to take her out and sling her then to haul the heavy bucket around while trying to hold DS's hand. But I was still fretting a little because there are a times (like at restaurants) where it really helps to have the infant seat to set the new baby in for a few minutes while you help the other kids or whatever, and wouldn't I miss it in those moments? My friend's very practical solution for me? Get the Marathon, and just put my old infant seat in the trunk to carry in to restaurants/stores on those rare occasions. Duh, I had to laugh at the simplicity of it...

I also like to keep my kids in a 5 point harness as long as possible, and my kids are not particularly heavy or tall, so I figure we will get a full 6 years of use out of the Marathon... definitely makes it cost effective in the long run! I will wait and buy it close to the birth though. I'm less concerned about off-gassing than about getting my full 6 years of use out of it.
