let's talk baby lotions....

I was just checking out the skin deep website, and I found that the 2 baby lotions that I use rank poorly....I was just wondering what you use on your babes. I just learned about the skin deep site, and I'm going through all of our products and deciding which to keep. Currently I use burts bees or J&J bedtime lotion
: But, I won't be using those anymore...any ideas??

Aveeno got a green light, but is it ok for babies? Just wondering what you all use. Thanks,

I've always used Aveeno Baby lotion. My ds was post-term and was born with cracks in all of his creases. The Aveeno really seemed to help. I've also found that it works really well for me when my hands get dry and cracked from too much handwashing. Other lotions sting, but not the Aveeno Baby. It is also fragrance free, which probably helps it be less irritating (plus, I just don't like fragrance in everything).

So it gets a thumbs up from me

The aveeno that I see on skin deep got a yellow light with 1.1 and 1.4 as the ratings. Burt's Bees Baby Bee Skin Creme got a 1.2 and the Burt's Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Lotion got a 1.6. All of these are yellow lights. the only green light ones I see under baby lotion are:
Badger Baby Balm Chamomile 0.1
Terressentials Organic Baby Body Lotion 0.5
Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment 0.6
Aubrey Organics Natural Baby & Kids Body Lotion 0.6
Weleda Calendula Baby Lotion 0.7
Gerber Teeny Faces Moisturizing Stick 0.8
I don't use lotion, but I wonder if coconut oil is ok on little ones.

ETA I love the Badger prodcucts

I use J&J baby lotion (ya know the pink bottle) Hmm I wonder if it ranks poorly like the J&J bedtime one does, it seems to work good, I used it on his hands and legs when he was born cause he was so over due he had cracks everywhere and really dry skin.
I don't put commercial lotins on my DC because of the mineral oil/ petrolatum content. I use Wee Body by Indigo Wild. It is a wonderful product.

Ditto. I use a homemade butter (shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil) and calendula infused olive oil/sweet almond oil on my ds's skin. Since it's winter, his skin has been very dry so I use the Weleda baby cream in addition to the butter and that works very well. I use the oil at every diaper change and he's been rash free (he had a nasty rash in the first few weeks).
I just use lotion from Trader Joe's. It's cruelty-free, comes in a huge pump, doesn't smell, and it's inexpensive. Works for all of us.
I used to buy another at Whole Foods, Rainbow Baby or something? it had a picture of a rocking horse on the bottle. That was good too. But TJ's is a way better deal.

What is wrong with Burts Bees?! That is what I use and I thought it was great...

etoilech What is the "skin Deep" website you speak of?
There was an article in the last issue of Mothering about the safety of bath/personal care products with a link to a sit where you can find/search ratings on most products you have or might buy. A lower rating (0-5) is better/safer. The website is by the Environmental Working Group www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/

I checked out the website too and started looking at all our products. I've been using Natures Gate fragrance free moisturizing lotion and it had a green light. I don't remember the specific rating though. I thought I saw higher rating for Aveeno? I know they had low ratings on the bath soaks and such but didn't think they were very low on other products. Maybe I'll check again.
Thanks for that. I have the magazine, BUT I hadn't had a chance to read it.

Anyone have an online source for Badger?

I use their products too. I don't think Burts Bees products are bad as much as there are other products rated better by the Skin Deep website. Burts Bees skin lotions get a 1.2-1.6 out of a possible 5 with 5 being of highest concern.
