Just broke my announcing UC mindset cherry!

A dear friend of mine is on the path to becoming a CNM. She recently asked me for a list of good books. I offered to send her all the books I have, as I am done with them. THey include Ina May, Rahima Baldwin, Birthing from WIthin and many more, 17 total. I'm also gonna throw in Laura Shanley and Emergency Childbirth for good measure. Here is the end of the letter I just sent her. I was trying to be careful to not be too overbearing.

They are yours to keep! With utmost respect to your desire to become a midwife, I want yout to know that for me (and a growing movement of women like me)-- I will never use a midwife again. My body was made to birth and any outside involvement beyond Nate represents a hazard. I experienced nothing but hindrance from my skilled and well-meaning midwives, in hindsight. I'm all about autonomous (unassisted) childbirth these days. I think there's a definite need for midwives as a learning experience in our day and age, but I think the bottom line for perfect birth is that a woman must feel perfectly safe to go by her own instincts and consciousness alone.

These books I'm giving you gave me a lot of invaluable info and insight which gave me knowledge and power to give birth in a day and age when such ideas have been lost for many women. But they also contain much that I STRONGLY disagree with, and I'm ready to pass them on. No one should ever manage a birth but the mother. No one should ever deliver the child but the mother. She is giving away her intrinsic rights and abilities, and self-confidence and trust in her body when she allows this to happen.

OK, off my soapbox I really do think you will make a great midwife! Love, Becca
