A few days after giving birth my BP shot up dramatically. It's believed my thyroid levels contributed and my levothyproxin was adjusted. I was also put on HCTZ. This was 3 weeks ago. Sadly my BP is still high, so my HCP prescribed lisinopril. My HCP said her info showed "Safety unknown" for breastfeeding. I've checked Dr. Hales site and didn't find much. Just that in older infants it should be fine. DD isn;t quite a month old though. Everything else I find says to avoid BF while on this drug.

Anyone else have more info on this med and BF?

I was on it for quite a while, but while my littlest was still little, we used Labetalol just because it's been researched more.

I never noticed any effects in my then 1 y/o while on 20mg of Lisinopril basing my decision in part that my BP had to be controlled & in other part that several other ACE inhibitors are thought to be ok for use & they don't differ that much in composition.

There really isn't any research that's been done on it that I could find. Sorry you have to deal with it, it's such a hard decision. If you are really concerned, you could talk to your HCP about switching you to a beta-blocker or calcium channel blocker instead as several of those have been researched much more in lactation.

We discussed other types of medications and she really thought that I would respond best to an ACE inhibitor. I'm sure I could push her to prescribe something else, but of all the HCP's I've seen in the past few years I actually trust her judgement. Though in my research I do like the sound of a beta-blocker. I go back to her in 3 weeks, I think we'll discuss it more then.

In the meantime though I think I'll take the lisinopril and pump/dump.
I already have a very low supply, and DD has refused since the beginning to latch on anyway (seriously, maybe in 4 weeks she's latched 5 times. Even 3 lactation consultants couldn't get her on), so it's not like we'll be missing the BFing itself. I really want her to get more breastmilk though. I hate that I can't give it to her. But everything I've read (and the pharmacist tonight agreed) indicates there isn't enough info to make it safe in a young baby.
But my health has to come first. Otherwise she might not have a mom period.

Darn it. Looks like my HCP was right when she said this would work really well for me. I took my first dose last night, and this morning my BP was down from 164/92 to 120/60. Very effective.
