Many of you know that my son was slightly retracted by 2 doctors. Since it happened he has always ballooned a little but has not been in too much discomfort. Well, all the sudden yesterday the ballooning increased big time and now he screams every time I take him potty. We EC so he does not potty in his diaper. I tried putting him in the bath to potty but that does not help b/c he wants to stand up to potty. The minute he stands up and starts peeing he starts to SCREAM and stiffens his body. I don't know what to do. He is really hurting and now he is starting to "hold" it b/c he does not want to pee. Should I give him some motrin? Any advice?

***For the lurkers. This is not a problem caused by foreskin. This is a problem caused by ignorant doctors who tried to retract my son when he was 3 and 5 months of age***

LatinaLoneStar I don't know what help I can give you, can you try and give NOCIRC a call or send an email? You said he won't sit in the tub, how about a cup of warm water?

He finally passed out and went to sleep after crying and crying. Poor guy would start shaking and thrashing the minute he started to urinate. I'm so scared for him to wake up. We tried the baking soda soak and that did not seem to help, in fact it seemed worse after that. We tried to get him to sit in the tub but he just arches his back and stiffens his legs. I gave him motrin and that did not help. I'm at a loss for what to do. I can't understand how it just all the sudden happened. I never thought that 5 months later this would happen.
If he were older I think it would be easier to help him but being that he is 10 months he doesn't understand.

I wish I could give you a firmer opinion. The motirn will take some time to take effect though right? He doesn't have any other issue though, no fever ect that could indicate something worse like a UTI?

ETA: You said it all of a sudden was ballooning larger, does that mean more foreskin broke away and that the pain could be from the raw surface left behind?

I put chamomile tea bags with some fresh lavender in a little pouch for my baby's bath, probably that will be soothing for your baby?

so sorry, I feel so helpless!

Yes all the sudden it is ballooning further up than before. The opening is still very small so the pressure is really pushing the urine under the foreskin. How long would it take for the surface to become accustomed to the urine?

Thank you for the phone number. Marilyn and I are both dumbfounded b/c it is so extreme. I took his temp. and he does not have a fever. His foreskin is red but there is no discharge or peeling and no major swelling. He pees and poops in the potty so it is highly unlikely to be any type of infection or yeast. We don't do bubble baths and we don't swim.

Hopefully Dr. Fleiss (spelling) will be able to help.

I would bet that's exactly what's happened. If he wants to stand, can you put a cup of just warm water around his penis when he pees? Just hold it there to try to dilute the urine from stinging the newly separated skin??

If it's any help at all, the discomfort my son had when he began ballooning lasted only a day or two and then never reappeared.

I'm so, so sorry he's in pain!

Don't be surprised if there is some discharge. If it's new ballooning, there may have been a pocket in there held by an adhesion. As the separation happens, that pocket can fill with sloughed skin cells, and those cells can now be washed away with the urine.

Like I said, with my son, there was a pretty significant amount of pain for about 24 hours (but he was over 3, so we could talk about it), then some discharge, and then everything was completely normal again -- except that he could balloon. And that's the way everything is still, and he's almost 6.

If it is what I think it is I am with Olive and say no more than two days. I wonder if increasing his fluid intake would also dilute the urine more and make it easier. Of course that might make him urinate more frequently too so I am not sure.

Let me know how it goes with Paul. And your very welcomed.

My first thought was new seperation as well. I would imagine it stings like having a tear near the urethra and that had me crying in pain after having dd. It really HURTS. The only thing that helped was peeing in water. Did you try a cup with water? Since he is associating this with peeing it is going to take him a bit to get past the fear even if it dosnt hurt much any more.

I would be tempted to try bacatracin and really put in on the outside and see if that helps some. It does have a bit of a numbing property or it seemed to when I used it on ds.

It's probably early seperation, possibly exasperated by the retraction incidents. The usual remedy of peeing underwater may not help much, since he is balloning the pee is trapped inside the foreskin and can't mix with the water.

5:45 am. No progress. THe water trick does not work b/c it gets trapped up in his foreskin and can't mix with the water. He is the most hysterical I have ever seen him. He usually goes every 30 minutes or so so this is going to be a LOOOOOONG day.

I hope to hear from Paul today.

I am so sorry you are both going through this.
I sometimes get the feeling that people think we are being overly dramatic about the Dr. retracting thing but this is a example of the problems that can happen because of it

He is finally asleep after his last bout of crying. I opened his diaper to find him VERY swollen. I thought to maybe put a little ointment on it but then he twitches the minute I touch him, it looks very painful. I don't want to wake him b/c he needs rest. Now he doesn't really want to nurse so I am afraid he is going to get dehydrated soon. I am going to call the anti-circ doctor here in PR and see if he can get us to a pedi- that is foreskin friendly, if one even exists here in PR.

If the opening were a tad wider this probably wouldn't be such a problem, which is why the doc should never have touched him back then. The ballooning must have slowly broken away at the adhesions over the course of the past 7 months.

We are at a loss for what to do. I can only hope that there is a foreskin friendly urologist here in PR. We are going to Dallas on the 19th, but I really don't think this can wait another day.

The swelling is pointing to more than just seperation issues. I would either be thinking yeast or bacterial. When my ds had the bacterial infection his penis started swelling and within hours it was 5x's the normal size. He cried a little when he peed but thank goodness has no trouble peeing even with the massive swelling. I couldnt believe how big it got with no problems peeing actually.

You can try OTC monistate the 7 day if it dosnt show improvment within 12 hours you can try the bacatracin. I am mentioning this in case you cant get him into a good dr today.

Have you read the seperation issue thread?

This is sounding like a bad case of separation. Perhaps another motrin will reduce the inflammation and the ointment is not a bad idea.

Just out of curiosity is that Puerto Rico? There must be a good doctor there some where in San Juan.

If you don't think it can wait see your Doc. You know enough to push for the least invasive treatment. Between you and your doc I am sure something can be done.
