Hi, I am cross posting a portion of a thread I just started in Breast Challenges.

I was asking about breast surgery and one sided feeding and all that on the other thread but here I have a more basic question (that may solve all my problems).

I am almost 33 weeks pregnant with our first. Yesterday I had blood come out of what I think was one of my nipple openings. I called my midwives and they said this is never normal and are currently setting up a referral to a breast specialist and so on.

However, I was assuming the blood was coming from a nipple opening (and thus from inside) because at a breastfeeding class last week I got the idea that nipple openings are all over the nipples, including down the sides. I got this idea because the teacher was talking about multiple openings and how milk could shoot out the side. ANYWAY, the blood coming from my nipple yesterday was beading up from one spot on the side but not on the top. Today I look at my nipple, it seems like there is the tiniest dark spot where the blood was coming from. I am wondering now if the blood was from a tiny crack on the side of my nipple. I had ruled out the possibility of a crack or cut yesterday because my nipples do not seem dry or cracked and I had not experienced any overt trauma to my breast.

SO are nipple openings all over and around the nipple or only on the top? I cannot seem to find any really detailed info to answer this question for myself.

I am still going to see a breast specialist no matter what. I was just hoping for info to maybe quell my nerves as I do not know when I will be able to be seen.

I finally got in touch with someone who could answer this question and thought I would post it here in case anyone was wondering.

Nipple openings are all around the entire nipple top and sides.
